A hundred years after a nuclear incident a 40-year-old man aspires to eke out an existence in a dangerous post-apocalyptic world. He has a dog he thinks to and he meets a mute flesh eater. Has a 'Walking Dead' feels as he lives in a prison with C3PO. Violence, swearing, bromance.
Wow. This book. If nothing else, it shows just how diversely talented TJ Klune is. I understand why other reviewers hated this, I really do, but I want to give this point of view for anyone (like me) who loves dystopian fiction. And in fairness, you do have to enjoy that genre to appreciate this story. I love TJ Klune's humour, but honestly in everything I've read of his there is always an underlying hint at darkness - I adored 'How to be a Normal Person' but it was so bitter-sweet, and even his drag queen we know and love had her moments of menace! Ultimately, lightness won out in those books. This book is the flip side to TJ Klune; W+S is dark, very dark, with an underlying glimmer of hope. I loved it.
5.0 out of 5 starsA robot, bad dog, and a man with secrets deal with an apocalyptic world and take on some cannibals!

Listen, I am an avid TJ Klune fan but even I was skeptical about this book. It’s dark, very dark and very different to what I normally read by this author. I expected to like it but I never thought I’d fall head of heels for these characters or for this story. Alas that is what happened. It’s hard to explain what I loved so much without spoiling the book. Just know that if you’re going to read it: it’s not sunshine and roses! This book is dark and at times terrifying. However we do have TJ’s humor and even though it’s not as present as in his other reads it’s still there, which in turn made the book lighter at times. It does deal with some heavy themes and don’t expect a heart pounding romance because you will be disappointed.
I won't give any spoilers so I'll keep this review brief . I really enjoyed this series , the characters were amazing and well developed. And the love story was gut wrenching . The only thing I didn't really enjoy at first was that there is a tonne of internal dialogue and usually that isn't my thing but as the story progressed and I stopped thinking about it , I found it didn't bother me as much .
Eww! Was hoping for the usual clever, witty, busy, uplifting and mesmerising work from this author as I'm a huge fan -or was until this book. Brilliantly clever, as always, but cruel, dark and inhuman/e. What a shocker-just hate that I wasted the money. Mad Max -psycho vibe all the way- genuinely loathed this.
