4.0 out of 5 stars The Witches of the Glass Castle 1 September 2014

Overall Rating: 4 Rockin’ ★★★★

Gabriella Lepore's book The Witches of the Glass Castle is a heart warming story of powerful witches, friends, family and finding true love. The story was well written and the characters effectively developed. I was ensnared by the story line immediately and captured by the delightfully crafted characters.

Mia and her brother Dino have just come into their powers as witches. Needing a place to further learn about themselves and the gifts that have been bestowed upon them, the siblings find themselves at the Glass Castle. However, there is an unforeseen power that wants Mia's brother, Dino.

Colt is a Hunter. A sentry of sorts for the Glass Castle. With great powers of his own, he was born and bred to hunt and kill all sorts of things witches included. Although, never is his wildest dreams did he think that he would learn to be human, really human in a way that he could love. He was born to be cold and vicious, but the day that Mia walked into the Glass Castle everything changed for him.

I loved this story. It brought about wonderful feelings of love and family. The feelings of knowing that how you are born is not a choice, but the friends that you trust is a choice that you can make. A story of coming of age, finding oneself, and living life to the fullest contain the concrete theme throughout this book. I recommend this book for sure. I can't wait to read more about this story! Beautifully done, Gabriella!

5.0 out of 5 stars will put under it's spell!! 19 July 2014

First let me say I loved this book. I mean I love when a book grabs you pulls you in and makes you want to read it all in one day. One that gives an escape from reality. One that makes you love some of the characters in the book and despise others. One that lets you see something coming but still has you saying OMG when hit happens. Yup that’s what I love in a book. Any one of them will do but this book does it all. I had my moments of laughing out loud and even cried a little (but I’m a cry baby, so that might be why). I really enjoyed this book. It was such a joy to read.

Ok on to the book and the author. One I have never heard of either till this one was released on kindle a friend invited me to the release party so I thought I’ll check it out. After all the cover is amazing and draws you in. From page one I was intrigued. I found the author did an amazing job getting you to feel and like the characters. I felt the story was well developed. The plot was amazing and I loved all the twist it took. Like I stated some things you see coming but when they do you still are like yes while others having you say no!!
This is a really good read and I recommend you pick it up today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another of Gabriella Lepore's books that I'll be reading again 16 July 2014

The Witches of the Glass Castle by Gabriella Lepore is an interesting story, there's no doubt about that.

We begin by meeting Dino and Mia, brother and sister. They, via an event (I won't mention what as it'd be a spoiler) discover they are/to become witches. To train, they're sent to The Glass Castle where many other young witches have been sent for generations to learn to discover, control and use their powers and skills.

At the castle we meet Wendolyn, an older lady, surprisingly old actually, who is in charge of training and watching over these young adults.

There are many different kinds of witches and each individual has to discover their own power for themselves. There are various Arcana, like Sententia and Tempestus.

There are also the feared Hunters who are powerful indeed. Hunters are born and bred to live, fight and serve, to protect their covens and their communities, at all costs.

We meet a couple of Hunters pretty early on in the book and not long after the initial meeting between them and Mia, she bumps into one of them again, Colt. Colt unexpectedly helps Mia (I won't say how, it'd be a spoiler).

Colt and Mia develop an interesting relationship throughout the book. Hunters as a rule are to be void of humanity and emotions to enable them to fight and hunt rivals without emotional ties to hinder their judgements. So, the relationship between the two is an unusual one. Mia brings out the humanity in Colt, which he somewhat dislikes initially, though he does eventually begin to accept that he has some kind of feelings for Mia. You'll have to read the story to understand the dynamics between these two characters.

The enemy: There is a rival coven on the lurk around the glass castle. This is where we meet Tol. Tol, I would describe as the bad guy in the story. He's hungry for power and will do whatever it takes to get it.

In short: Join the Arcana and the Hunters as they learn, bond and grow and see how they hold their ground against Tol and the rival coven.

Favourite character: Colt for sure. I just love his quick quips and quotes. He really tickles me.

I've enjoyed reading this book so much. I looked forward to bedtime on a night so I could immerse myself in the story and continue reading. I'd rate this book 5 stars. It's just the kind of story I needed to read right now and I bonded with the characters really well. I like the theory behind the book, the world they live in, the way they live in the castle. Despite having a number of different characters it was very well done and easy to differentiate between each character too.

To finish. Would I read it again? I'll definitely be reading this book again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review 6 August 2014
By Hayley Guertin - Published on

The Witches of the Glass Castle was a phenomenal book! Straight from the prologue, I was intrigued and wanted to read more. The book went by so fast, I didn't want it to end! Gladfully, the book ended on the exact note I wanted it to end on, and it was perfect. The stories of Mia and Dino were fun to discover and read about.

This book was funny and interesting from the start. There were a lot of serious moments just like there were plenty of humorous ones as well. The book itself was written so that it was a nice fast paced read, and I did in fact read it in one sitting. The storyline was great, and very entertaining. I also enjoyed that there was not just one story we were following, but the story of both siblings. It gave chance once in a while, making sure you didn't get bored.

The characters were fun to meet. The moment I heard about the Hunters, I hoped that we would get to know them better, and we did. The relationship between Mia and Colt is sweet and thrilling all at the same time. Although Mia was a bit of a ditz in my opinion, I guess it did work out well in the story, but more than once I was face-palming myself or cringing at her.

All in all, the book was great. I loved all of the characters, and I would have to say my favourite would be Colt, because of his badass-ery. This book made me laugh, gasp, say "aww!!" and even made me sad. Gabriella did a wonderful job with it, and I have to give it 5 out of 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable! 21 July 2014

This book came highly recommended to me by a friend over on Instagram who was hosting a read-a-long, so I decided to jump on board and give it a go. I had one of Gabriella Lepore's other books on my Kindle, but hadn't managed to get around to it yet, so I was excited at the opportunity to read something of hers.

Mia and her brother Dino have their world rocked, when out of the blue they learn that they are both witches and are sent to Glass Castle for the summer to develop their abilities. Whilst Mia seems to take it all in stride, Dino struggles with it right from the very first.

Dino was a character that I found a little bit hard to like. He was incredibly harsh at times and I just couldn't understand why. It is revealed to us part way through the book, but I think I could have liked him better if I had known his reasons a bit earlier in. I think his storyline was the one that I enjoyed the most though. He is faced with the toughest of choices and the much darker path, which was the most exciting aspect of the story for me.

I liked Mia, even though there were times that she came across as quite young and vulnerable for her age. I liked her willingness to embrace the changes in her and to take the initiative to learn more and understand it.

The romance between Mia and Colt didn't have me on board from the beginning. Colt is very short and abrupt with Mia and there were definitely no warm and fuzzy moments between them in the beginning. But I think Mia was a bit like me, in that she was intrigued by Colt. I wanted to understand him better I think. He is very cocky and self assured and has no problem telling everyone how great he is. Colt is a hunter and he has no room for love. But occasionally there would be a little moment where I could glimpse that Mia was affecting Colt and he wasn't quite sure how to deal with that. It was those vulnerable moments that kept me wanting to learn more about him. And by the end of the book, I was quite invested in the progression of their feelings for each other.

I must confess that I haven't read a whole lot of books based around witches, but I think I would have liked a bit more insight into Mia and Dino's emerging abilities and a bit more of the witchy side of things. Spells and potions and such. But in saying that, it didn't detract from the story because there was always quite a bit going on.

The Witches of the Glass Castle was an enjoyable read that kept me entertained throughout. I'm really glad to hear that there will be a sequel and look forward to seeing how things progress with Dino and Mia's abilities and how Colt deals with this thing called love.

3.5/5 Witchy Stars.
