5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping mystery 19 January 2017
By Mel M - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
When we meet Neil Marshall, his life is going downhill fast. He's in the middle of a messy divorce and has to live with his close friend, Jason. But when Jason is found murdered, Neil is thrown into a murder mystery that will have him taking on the role of detective to prove his innocence.

Neil is very dimensional, he makes mistakes, but I found myself cheering him on throughout the book. I like when an author gives the supportive characters as much depth as the main character, and Hemlin did just that.

I also love the "who done it" style mysteries, and this book didn't disappoint. In fact, I found myself staying up later than I should have just to finish it! The action and suspense is gripping, and the beautiful descriptive passages throughout the book will make you feel like you're in the middle of everything.

Folks who enjoy mysteries should definitely give this book a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars When his best friend, Jason 26 June 2016

Neil Marshall is a 30-year old chef and aspiring writer. When his best friend, Jason, is killed, Neil finds himself in the middle of a mystery. His journey to find his friend's killer acquaints him with various characters, not all of them desirable.

This book had my attention from the beginning. Mr Hemlin's writing is outstanding, putting you in the middle of the action and not letting you go. I didn't anticipate finishing this book in two days, but found myself at 2 a.m., closing the cover with a sigh. The story is peppered with southern charm, such as... "Jason was tough enough to hunt bears with a switch". There are many beautifully descriptive passages that I highlighted, such as..."Long splinters of sun threaded between the tall ponderous pines".

Well done, Mr. Hemlin. I can't wait to read A Whisper Of Rage. 5 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars his stables-owning best friend's offer of a couch to sleep on seems ... 1 February 2017

Neil Marshall doesn't want to be a cowboy detective; he wants to be a poet. In the meantime, he works at a high-end catering company in Houston. But life keeps throwing things his way that take him out of the kitchen and out of his comfort zone. His bitter wife is making their separation agony; his stables-owning best friend's offer of a couch to sleep on seems like a life raft of hope. When the friend is murdered, Neil wants to know by whom and why, and it almost gets him killed as well.

We meet Neil's circle of friends – and frenemies: the other catering employees, some of the clients that are rich, connected Houstonians who might have evil on their minds, students and faculty in his classes at U. of H. and the Littlefields, who live near the stables and help care for the horses.

How all these circles interconnect make for a wild ride and some often-deadly adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and highly recommended 15 March 2017

The first book in the Neil Marshall mystery series is fast paced and action packed, and held my attention from start to finish. Soon after leaving his wife and winding up on his best friend's couch, part-time catering assistant, graduate student, and poet, Neil Marshall, finds himself inadvertently embroiled in the middle of a murder case. As one of the main suspects and feeling the pressure from an antagonistic assistant district attorney, he sets out to investigate a few things himself in hopes of clearing his name. Written in 1997 and set in Houston, it brings back fond memories of the city when the Astrodome and the Ale House were the places to be. The good guys are flawed, quirky, and likable, and the bad guys are fun to hate. There's also something there for the foodie and, of course, the horse lover. A thoroughly enjoyable read and highly recommended.

Definitely rich in entertaining value. A very nice read. Smooth, fast paced, with the right amount of action and mystery.

I figured out who did it, but towards the end, and that was very refreshing.

Great at characters, well developed and realistic.

An excellent choice for light reading.
