The story was well written but I found the adoption topic a bit off-putting. Many young girls were forced to give up their children back then but realistically, how could they properly support them? Janet had proven herself to be a naïve teenager given the fact that she had sex with a complete stranger and did not even know his full name. If she had truly cared about her daughter, she would not, as a young girl tracked the family down. That was a selfish move and she had no idea the trouble or heartbreak it could bring. I feel the author was wrong to include that. Janet came across as a very needy person who relied on everyone else or who blamed others for her problems. She blamed Mark for walking out on her and she continually blamed him throughout her life. He was not Paula's father and did not have to bear responsibility. She needed advice from a lawyer but rather than obtain the info herself, she again relied on someone else. IMO, not one of Ms Williams best books.
Well written, a real weepy keep the handkerchiefs handy. A story of an era when this was a reality of young mothers having to give up Abbotsford adoption.
