Product Description

Reunite in this 26,000-word novella with the MacKinnon brothers and their wives for Christmas—and a tale of love, new life, and redemption.

The war between Britain and the French is finally at an end, and the MacKinnons are looking forward to celebrating their first peacetime Christmas in five long years. While Iain and Annie have discovered that the pleasures of marriage grow deeper with time, Morgan and Amalie find themselves at bitter odds. Meanwhile, Connor and Sarah have a newborn son to cherish.

The family’s preparations for the holidays are interrupted when Iain learns that Britain has not paid the Rangers for the summer’s victorious campaigns. Unwilling to let men who fought under the MacKinnon name suffer deprivation at Christmastime, Iain, Morgan, and Connor leave the warmth of their frontier farm for Albany. There, they find their happy Christmas, and even their freedom, at risk at the hands of a ruthless British officer who holds a grudge against them.

With the men gone, Annie, Amalie, and Sarah do their best to prepare for the festivities despite differing traditions, a raging bull—and the gnawing fear that their husbands won’t make it home for Yule.

Events begin the day after the epilogue of Defiant ends. The story includes Joseph, Killy—and revelations about the fate of Lord William Wentworth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sigh.... 28 November 2013

I love the MacKinnon brothers - I loved catching up with them and their families.

This novella was lovely - I laughed, I sighed and I even cried - to me that is as good as it gets in a romance novel.

I was happy to see Killy finally finding love - he has always been a special favorite of mine.

I don't want to spoil anything - but I was delighted that the brothers finally made peace with Lord William. I know he has been a villain, but I was always intrigued by him.

My only gripe was that there was no happy ending for Joseph - but I hope that means he is getting his own story!! And I hope Lord William gets a story too - he deserves it!

All in all this was a great novella. Thank you Ms. Clare for a wonderful update on some of my favorite characters ever!!!
5.0 out of 5 stars The MacKinnon Brothers' Happy Ending 30 December 2014

What a treat to read this Christmas novella about the MacKinnon brothers, Scottish-American warriors in eighteenth century New York. I loved Ian in Surrender, Morgan in Untamed, and Connor in Defiant. Each brother met an incredible woman in his story, and now the three couples live in wedded bliss on the MacKinnon farm, eager to celebrate the birth of Christ with their collective families.

But when the brothers discover the dastardly British never paid their fellow Rangers for 5 years of military service, they know they must right this wrong. So they head to Albany to seek reparation for the men who fought with them. The last time they headed to Albany, they were wrongfully accused of murder and forced into military service, leading to imprisonment and whippings. Naturally they fear a similar outcome, but their bravery compels them to take care of their men.

I continue to enjoy the shades of grey of Wentworth, the man who engineered the brothers' downfall years ago. Can he redeem himself? Earn forgiveness from the brothers?

Pamela Clare, one of my favorite authors, knows how to write strong women. Morgan's wife Amalie uses some of her considerable wealth to buy Christmas gifts to make life better at the farm. One is a massive, unruly bull.

"The bull bellowed and turned as if to run, the sudden motion causing Farmer Fairley to drop the rod. For a moment, Amalie feared the bull would charge the poor farmer, perhaps even gore him.

Without thinking, she stepped between the farmer and the terrified animal, raised her hand, and struck the bull as hard as she could on its nose. "Non!"

It quietened at once, turning its head to gaze at her.

Any fear she'd felt subsided. She took the rope from a startled Farmer Fairley, then chastised the bull in her native tongue. "Comporte-toi bien ou tu seras castre et finiras dans ma marmite!"

Behave, or you will be gelded and put in my stewpot!"

I loved these honorable hottie heroes getting the good lives they deserve.
5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas with the MacKinnons 6 December 2013

Finally, the War is over. The MacKinnon brothers are on their family land living the life they held in their dreams and hearts for the last five years. Each brother is married to the woman they love, but as we learned in the previous books in the series, it was not an easy trip to the altar for Ian, Connor and Morgan. It is only a week till Christmas, their crops were plentiful and it had been a bountiful season. They were all looking forward to the warmth, joy and peace of this Christmas.

This is a wonderful novella filled with familiar, and well loved characters. The story picks up right where the last novel, Defiant, ends. Joseph arrives with Killy in a drunken stupor . Killy has fallen in love with a very strong, tall, and curvy independent pub owner, who has spurned his declarations of affection, the reason for his drunken stupor. But, they bring other more disturbing news. Disturbing enough that, despite the Yule just a week away, the brothers must travel to Albany to face a new nemesis, Brigadier General Haviland who has replaced General Wentworth. The wives agree with the decision, but can't help worrying about the danger traveling in the treacherous winter weather, but especially fear that they will be detained and won't make it home for Christmas. Amalie, Annie and Sarah prepare for the holidays, despite their fears.

Ms. Clare's countless historical fans will love this chance to look into the lives and latest adventures of the MacKinnons. They are husbands, fathers and farmers foremost, but still strong and brave and dedicated to their men. A surprise Christmas present, brings a very humorous twist to this story, and the love and heat between these couples adds the perfect touch. I highly recommend this novella, and if you haven't read the stories leading to this one; Surrender, Untamed and Defiant your missing some amazing reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Story of Family 31 December 2013

I love this author... And I can't stop reading, re-reading and listening to great audiobook performances of everything she has written. I especially love the MacKinnon stories and characters from pre-revolutionary America. This MacKinnon Christmas story was almost perfect and I especially enjoyed the forgiveness scene with Lord William. My only slight quibble was the resolution of conflict between Morgan and Amalie. The scene seemed rushed and generic without revelations that would propel the characters to resolve their differences. I wished the author had found a way to surprise me or make it special and timely to the events surrounding the characters. Maybe I am so used to the brilliant, complicated suspense filled plotting this author is especially skilled at, that I have a hard time enjoying a "simple" "short" story. In any case, this novella is well worth reading and a nice epilogue to the MacKinnon tale. I can't wait for Lord William's story.

Not only did I love that she took our Scottish highlanders and transported them to the American colonies, but I loved how well-written this story is and the flow that made it hard to put down...hence a quick read because you wanted to keep reading! Some authors have a slower pace to telling their stories, but I love when an author gets it just right and it makes you excited and eager to keep reading on! Great author, great book, great love stories! Highly recommend!
