An excellent read with a believable,if deeply flawed, lead character. The "why" is as baffling to Frankie as the "who" and the book reminded me very much of the great James Ellroy's books full of sleaze, bent politicians,low-life,the mad,bad and very dangerous to know.
Not quite as slick as his later books but a very good read indeed and I gave a silent cheer (I was reading in the staff canteen and a loud one might well have been embarrassing) at what was a very satisfying ending.
It does seem a bit slow to start but the main character (Frankie) is richly developed and i was fascinated by him. Once the book gets going it was hard to put down. Frankie has an amazing background and the book relives this as he tries to work out what is going and and why. This may sound a bit cryptic but if i say more it will ruin some of the plot.
He is a great character, both plausible (unlike superhuman special forces people who are impossible to kill) and likeable in a way that you rarely see. Almost Jack Reacheresque.
It was one of those really rare books where i was sad once I had finished and was left hoping for more books featuring Frankie.
I read this in 2 sittings. Honestly? If you enjoy a good crime story, you’ll love this. Oh and the ending ........? Read it.
The story centres around the actions of the West Coast mafia, seen through the eyes of its most feared hitman, who is now on the run from the mob.
It's very tightly written and could easily have stretched another 200 pages, but as the saying goes: "be thankful for what you've got". A mini epic.
Like the superb Power of the Dog this is brilliant story telling. This time focusing on the mob and how it operates. Really engrossing read.
I couldn't put it down.
3rd Winslow book I've read after Power of the Dog and The Cartel.
Just about to purchase a couple of others.
Don't want to spoil it, just read it, it's epic!!
Impossible to put down. Impossible to forget.
The story of Frankie Machine will stay with you for a very long time.
