At first I was hesitant because I thought why not just use acrylic as watercolour? But these colours are so concentrated and vibrant it's beautiful. Also it's really easy to just make things that look nice using watercolours.
Easy to use hard to master.
I love them especially at the discount price of £40!!
Here's some photos of the first two things I've done so far
The box is sturdy off-white plastic with two folding lids - one split into large mixing areas and one split into small ones. The half-pans are in rows moulded within the plastic with small wedge-y projections holding them in place. This means that you cannot put whole pans into the same box (without filing down the projections). If you remove a lot of the paints (like the duplicates), the others tend to rattle around a lot more. When it arrives, every half-pan is individually wrapped and it is a LOT of fun unwrapping all 45 of them! In some cases, the actual extruded paint block falls out of the half-pan very easily, but all you need to do is paint water onto the base of it and put it into the half pan and let it dry overnight - if that fails, repeat it with a gum Arabic solution instead. There is space for a brush but no brush is provided - the space isn't enough for a waterbrush, but it would take a decent sized round or a squirrel-hair mop.
Whilst this is named a "studio set", I'm actually using it for en plein air painting and keeping my high-quality paints for studio use - all that was needed was a sheet of foam over the paints to keep them from slipping in transit and to fill any gaps with blocks of sponge (very useful in the field). I've added a size 000 squirrel hair mop (holds a lot of paint but has a fine point) for en plein air use, along with a half-pan of oxgall for effects. Similar adaptations could be used when transporting this to and from classes, for example.
The paints lift really easily - you can mist the whole lot with water containing a drop of acrylic flow enhancer and then paint within seconds (using normal clean water for painting). They re-wet really well, quite unlike Cotman tube paints that have been dried down - but that drop of flow enhancer makes a world of difference.
Bought for someone with failing memory so mixing of coulours was to a large extent eliminated.
Contrart to some comments I found everything to be of good even high quality.
As stated in the Q&A section the set includes Lemon Yellow, Cad Yellow, Cad Yellow Hue, Cad Orange Hue, Cad Red Pale Hue, Cad Red Deep Hue. Alizarin Crimson Hue, Purple Lake, Ultramarine, Colbolt Blue Hue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Intense Blue (Phthalo Blue), Veridian Hue, Emerald, Hookers Green Dark, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Indian Red, Burnt Umber, Payne's Gray, Lamp Black, Chinese White.
I would have no trouble recommending this.
I like the fold out mixing palettes. And the value on Amazon is amazing. However ther are two small things to bear in mind which let this set down.
1. The pans fall about if the set is placed in a bag or not keeps perfectly horizontal. I may have to put some blue tack underneath them. Also If you remove The front mixing palette to make it easier to paint with and do not fix this back on before transporting - then they move about even more!
2. It's not easy to see the colours. I would suggest doing a chart after you've fixed the pans in place.
I liked that there were spaces for extra pans - and the repeated colours made room for a few more too.
The first time I bought this product was in 2010 and used it all the time throughout university and I still have it today! 36 of the 45 pans still have product and some of them look like they haven't been touched once.
I've bought a new pack now in 2017, rather than replacing individual pans, which would have cost about £28 I decided that I might as well just buy a whole new one.
There was also a Lamp Black (probably never get used either). Other doubles included Ultramarine and Yellow Ochre which, in fairness, will probably be useful given how much I use of these two colours.
It's pretty much 38 pans and not 45 - the colour range is pretty good, probably far too many greens, very good range of blues and yellows (hence my comments about greens). Earth colours are pretty well covered as well.
It's a nice, tidy case. Sturdily made with a good clasp - plenty of mixing wells with a handy removable palette section.
Overall, typical of what you would expect from a Winsor & Newton student set at this price.
In general, I think the set is perfect for beginners as it comes with good quality, wide range of colours and affordable price.
