Francesca Darlington is desperate to win the Derby for her own reasons. She’s managed to cajole her father into an agreement: if her colt wins the Derby, then she’ll earn the freedom to marry whomever she wants. But if she loses, she’ll marry the man her father has chosen for her—a man she will never love.
When an accident at the track brings Frankie back into Shaw’s arms, old desires return, and Frankie realizes that Shaw is the only man she wants to marry. But only one of them can win the Derby and seize their dream for the future, while the other is racing for a fall.

About the author

I’m an author of spicy Regency romance with alpha heroes and independent heroines, layers of emotion, and lots of sizzle. I fell in love with historical romances and all things Regency—and especially all those dashing Regency heroes—while living in England, where I spent most of my time reading Jane Austen and getting lost in London (especially the getting lost part). I have traveled around the world, both as a tourist and as a volunteer with children's organizations in Peru, Ecuador, Thailand, and Mexico. I love to hike and fly airplanes, adore all things chocolate and coffee, and am a Doctor Who fanatic (everyone says my house *is* bigger on the inside!). I am a terrible cook who hopes to one day use my oven for something other than shoe storage. In my spare time, when I'm not writing or teaching, I enjoy tending the roses in my garden during the summer and reading historical romances during the winter. My fav authors are Elizabeth Hoyt (her Maiden Lane series is fantastic!), Sabrina Jeffries (fabulous emotion on every page), Lisa Kleypas (whose prose is simply divine!)and Sylvia Day (who isn’t afraid to take historical romance in all kinds of new and hot directions).
I've been writing since 2015, when All About Romance named me Best Debut Historical Romance Author for my debut series, THE SECRET LIFE OF SCOUNDRELS. DUKES ARE FOREVER won the 2016 Maggie Award for Best Historical Romance, and HOW I MARRIED A MARQUESS was a 2017 RITA finalist. ALONG CAME A ROGUE broke through the usual Regency romance tropes by being about a woman who is nothing like other traditional Regency heroines. And in ONCE A SCOUNDREL, we’re taken twenty-five years into the future, to follow the loves and losses of the next generation of scoundrels.
I'm so excited this year to launch my new series, CAPTURING THE CARLISLES. When these heroes meet their heroines, they've met their matches--in more ways than one! IF THE DUKE DEMANDS, in which Sebastian’s desire to find the perfect duchess is turned upside down by Miranda Hodgkins, was named a TOP PICK by Night Owl Reviews. WHEN THE SCOUNDREL SINS is Quinton’s chance for love…if he can find a way to open his heart. (RT Reviews gave it a 4-1/2 stars TOP PICK rating.) Book 3, AS THE DEVIL DARES, to be released in March 2018, pits Robert Carlisle against his greatest adversary—Mariah Winslow, the woman standing between him and his business partnership. Stay tuned for more information about the Carlisle brothers and their equally rakish cousins!

On a positive note however, I did like both Frankie and Shaw and thought their romance was very sweet. It was rushed though and I never would have guessed these two hadn't seen each other in four years if the author hadn't said so. I could have done without the sex scenes too, since I'm not a fan of them in books this short. I also found most of the story predictable and just not real exciting, although Frankie's actions at the end did surprise me.
Overall I think the story had good bones, but there just wasn't enough time to develop much of anything. Instead this tales believability relies on a history and past that we are told about (and not much either) rather than shown. I do think Harrington's writing has potential though and I'll probably give one of her longer books a try sometime in the future. This one simply missed the mark for me however and while it wasn't terrible, in the end it was just okay.
Setting: Surrey, England, May 1810
Pages & Kindle Locations: The story itself contained 91 pages and ended at 84% and location 1212.

I do enjoy a heroine who wants to buck the rules of her time. Francesca doesn't want to marry, at least not the wrong man, but does want to breed horses. I also appreciate Jackson's strength and work to become his own business owner. When two characters figure out they can be stronger together, that's the win.
Uncle Jonas is the kind of side character we want, who sees more than you think he sees. There's a slimy suitor that gets what he deserves, and Francesca's father, who proves to actually be decent. It is nice to have that for a change.
At the end, there's a win and a twist and it all works so we can have our HEA. A satisfying read for fans of Anna Harrington and historical romance fans looking for a quick afternoon read.
Included at the end is the first chapter of a previously published book in the Capturing the Carlisles series.

They had met when he worked for her father as the stable master and had fallen in love. But he'd made the decision to leave since it would never work out between them. She was a Viscount's daughter after all and he...
Jackson had gone out on his own to make a name for himself as a horse trainer, but had not established himself to be sustainable yet. So his entry in the Derby was critical that he win.
Francesca was determined herself to avoid being married to a man her father picked out. If she could prove herself and the colt she had bred by winning the Derby, she would be able to choose her path.
The only problem was that she and Jack ran into each other and those feelings wrapped around them again.
So much was at stake and not just with the race as these two need a win to determine their future, with the winner taking all... Perfect.

I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary.

Francesca Darlington twenty-three had raised Midnight from a colt and had trained it. She needed a win so she could choose her life, marry whom she wished.
This a very good novella but if it was longer it could have been fleshed out even more. It was well written and easy to read. It is also something you could read with lunch. The characters were engaging, fun, and in love. There is so much to this book and I am glad I got the chance to read it.
I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.
