5.0 out of 5 stars A True Classic Redefined.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2020
I don't think I really need to go into how much this album meant to Tom. It marked a real shift from his typical Heartbreaker sound, or even that of his solo debut, Full Moon Fever. Wildflowers has its rockier anthems, true, but mainly consists of slower ballads, and heartfelt odes to sorrow and hardship. Wildflowers really marked where Tom mastered the complexity and intricacies of songwriting, and it shows across these three records, more than ever before.
Longtime fans of Petty and this album in particular will lament how tough it was to pick up a 'cheap' copy of the original WF on vinyl, with prices generally beginning at the low $200's. Now, we can take in all the rich sound of the album on vinyl once more; remastered, and in its original, intended track listing. The vinyl isn't quite 180g, which is somewhat bizarre, but it really doesn't matter. The sound quality on this remaster is insane.
I will confess that, much as I'm sure Tom would disagree, the 15 tracks that made up the 'final' Wildflowers are probably the best, and the extra 10 tracks in 'All The Rest' are mixed bag, personally. 'California' and 'Climb That Hill' - songs that would end up in their final form on Tom & the Heartbreakers' 'She's The One' soundtrack - are great, as is 'Leave Virginia Alone' and 'Something Could Happen'. The rest are alright. But it's still incredible that we, fans of Tom, can own these songs at all.
And physically, this set is just as beautiful. It's a tri-panel sleeve, a double gatefold, with custom artwork of every track and pictures of Tom we haven't even seen before. The lyrics are all there and it's just so obvious that a great deal of devoted care has been given - quite rightly - to the album's reissue. This 3LP set is a celebration of Tom's memory, and a more-than-worthy tribute to Wildflowers. I highly recommend.
