Product Description

Midnight at the datacenter. Crimping cable, testing circuits, and—

—dodging bullets?

Toby just wants to finish tonight’s install and go home, but gunfire and spilled blood mean he might never go home again.

But one gunman turns into a team. Hostages. And stakes higher than Toby’s ever faced.

One cable monkey versus an assault team?

Time to fight like a nerd.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit shorter than some of his recent work, but an exciting ride worth your reading time 12 April 2017

This is one of Michael Lucas's more traditional shorter novels. (Novella?) I picked it up when a review on git commit murder mentioned the reviewer had big expectations after reading this book.
I like our protagonist. Even if he is a networker, the traditional rival of syadmins everywhere. He worries about saving his own neck until it's clear keeping himself safe means others may die. May all of us be as noble.
Since it is a shorter book, I found myself saying "NO! I NEED MORE!" But, on reflection, I really think that is Hollywood's influence on me. I expect to see a simple scenario padded out for 2-2.5 hours. While I wanted more Wifi and Romex, I don't really think it would have been much improved by more length.
Definitely worth your purchase. If you haven't read git commit murder yet, I'd actually recommend starting with this as an appetizer, so when you find yourself wanting more, you have the phenomenal Git Commit Murder after. Although, make sure you do this early enough in the day or have a sick day left for when you don't sleep until completing the books.

An everyman Amuse Bouche. The main character was sympathetic and believable and the charm lay in seeing the average guy react to a situation when dropped into his own Nakatomi Plaza. But it was shorter than I expected--I felt like I was just getting going when [redacted] and the story was over.

Fun short story, the author is more known for his technical work but his fiction is always enjoyable.
