I loved the main character Liv- her strength and her convictions.
I found the romance of Liliana and Jack really captivating.
I got a little teary eyed at the end. Lovely!
Second, Annie’s story of family, love, conflict and War has all the hallmarks of her rigorous research and beautiful storytelling that I always look forward to and am never disappointed by. Thank you Annie.

Olivia is 30, she works for her father in his big company. He is a terrible rat of a person and her mother has tried to warn her about him but she desperately wants him to acknowledge and be proud of her. She has been sent to a small community to try and sell the locals on allowing their company to install a coal machine and in a few words, destroy the reef and other sea animals as well as the pristine beauty of the islands. All Olivia/Liv knows is what she has learned from researching and checking maps. Now she is getting a first hand look at what they want to destroy.
The locals are working hard to prevent the company, backed by China, from coming in and destroying their home, tourist visitors, etc. There is one special, Flynn, that is really driving Liv crazy. He seems to be everywhere she looks. When things start to go downhill, she is afraid he is following her to prevent her from giving her presentation. Then suddenly everything goes to heck. She is learning things that she would rather not know.
Now, go back in time to before Australia entered World War II. A family lives on one of the outlying islands. Mom, dad, and the children. It is a rather isolated way of life but they have each other, the goats, and the boats come to the island on a daily basis plus they have their own boat to go back and forth to the mainland.
Three young men come to the island to spend a 5 day pass from the air force. This starts a love story that is lovely, sad, and forever. And then the war becomes very real. There is adventure, love, betrayal, murder, and family secrets that will blow your mind. It is a great story. Never a disappointment with Ms. Seaton's books. I loved this one. A lot more adventure than I am use to but learning a history lesson at the same time. The plane described in this story reminds me of today's P-3 or P-8 that the Navy flies in the US. Great, great story. Be sure to read the author's note at the end to realize how much went into this story.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 8/21/2021
