This is an excellent novel for a number of reasons. First, the plot moves right along and yet the descriptions of the locations are vivid. One can easily picture the town of Kinloch and the Kintyre coastline. Second, while the reader knows this is just a story, much of the take is believable. Daley, Liz, and Scott are believable, as are Donald and the rest of the characters. Third, the minor characters are well-defined and likeable. Fifth, and most important, is the dialogue between all of the characters. One can almost feel the dialects and inflections.
To me, the writing has a feel of Scottish/Irish authenticity (which, of course, it is). The phraseology is different from most English writers in that the Scots, Irish, and Welsh have the benefit of having a Gaelic background, which seems to impact the writings of these folks in a very positive and readable way. The pride just seems to flow. I will be purchasing anything else from Mr Meyrick.
