About the Author

David Wishart became interested in malt whisky when, as a mathematics undergraduate at St Andrews, he was first introduced to cask-strength Laphroaig by his father. Following his father into the Scottish Office, David qualified as a Chartered Statistician and served as Director of Statistics. He gained a PhD in classification methodology at the University of St Andrews, where he was an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Management from 1996 until 2015. David's research field is Marketing. He chose the Scotch Whisky Industry for specific study because it is a vital Scottish industry having the largest exports by value (excluding oil), is supported by a large and diverse workforce, and an icon of Scotland throughout the world. He is invited to give whisky talks and tastings to postgraduates and at international conferences. --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

I'm an amateur whisky enthusiast - been to a festival, tried lots at the pub, share bottles with friends.

This is an excellent way to help you find more of what you like (and flavours you might want to give a go ;-) ). I'm a fan of whisky that is spicy and dry - this helped my find a handful of distilleries that make excellent drams of this sort. Well worth a read if you want a different way to choose your Scotches.

Also has a nice concise history of the 'water of life' for those who are interested.

Only four stars because it has to go on the most commonly sold bottle from each distillery - which may be nowt like what you end up buying.

PS the author has a website with much of this information freely available.

I recommend this book as a good reference manual to assist you in selecting different Scotch's with the characteristics you most enjoy.
Dr. Wishart in this book provides you with a means of selecting different Scotch Whiskys that have similar characteristics. He developed this system to do away with the old idea that whiskys should be compared by the geography of the distillery. This allows you to purchase and compare different brands with with similar characteristics, regardless of the location of their distillation. An excellent book for the more serious Scotch drinker.
The book also includes a review of many of the brands of Scotch available today.

Most scientifically valid description of single malt whisky flavours

This a great whisky book. Dr Wishart's analysis provides the most justified (and statistically valid) approach to categorizing single malt whisky flavours. There are a lot of "flavour maps" out there, but none of them are based on any sort of rigorous analysis of evidence. The approach taken here is very illuminating, and well described in simple and clear language. Frankly a must for anyone looking to analyze and classify whisky flavours. Unfortunately the website described in the book (for more information and data) has disappeared. But whiskyanalysis.com seems to have picked up where this analysis left off, with additional statistical analysis of whisky quality.
The second half of the book has a great overview of major distillers - with a handy pronunciation guide. This book will help demystify many key concepts in whisky production, very highly recommended!

I am afraid this book did not meet my expectations. It does give an interesting explanation of the history of Scotch whisky and how it is made but that information is available in many places. The meat of the book (the reason I bought it) involves breaking all Scotch whisky into ten taste groups -- an interesting and potentially very helpful aim. Then it goes off the rails -- two pages are devoted to EACH of the operating distilleries (history, methods, etc.) but only one of each distilleries' releases (expressions) is categorized. For the rest you are referred to a website which no longer exists; the book was published in 2002. The book could have been a veritable bible for people interested in single malts but instead it's just a good idea which never really got off the ground.
