Product Description

Anger and pain brought them together, but their passion might just set them free.

Dimitri wants only one thing: revenge. His stepfather, Hendrix, has caused him nothing but pain and heartache. At last Dimitri can take something—someone—important to Hendrix and make him pay: Jess.

Jess is feisty and strong headed. Her past haunts her and connects her to the dangerously dark Dimitri in an unexpected way. Dimitri keeps his secrets locked deep inside, and Jess is drawn to this broken man like no one before.

With little to cling to besides their haunting pasts, both could have been doomed to lives spent raging against the darkness that holds them prisoner. Instead, it seems that as their pain draws them closer together, it is their desire and combustible passion that will set them free.

Where Darkness Lies is a sizzling romance and the second book in the popular Criminals of the Ocean series.

She has written another amazing book that has now been added to my favourites list.
I've been dying for the release of this book and did not disappoint.
Dimitri and Jess were perfect for each other. They made each other better. They helped each other love and to forgive and let go.
Can't wait for Drake's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking forward to the next in the series 29 December 2014

This book picks up where book 1 ended. It could be read as a standalone, however to really understand the characters I would recommend reading book 1, which was a 5 star read for me. In this book you have a mix of modern day pirates (like a floating MC), a little MMA/cage fighting, some mafia type, nefarious dealings by Dimitri, a case of revenge biting you on the ass and a profound love story. Dimitri is the stepson of Hendrix, the main character from book 1. He feels Hendrix abandoned him during the darkest period of his life and he now seeks revenge or payback against Hendrix. Hendrix rescued Jess from an abusive relationship and she has lived on Hendrix’s boat for two years. She has a big brother type love for Hendrix and is loyal to him. Dimitri kidnaps Jess because he thinks Jess and Hendrix have a romantic relationship. Both Dimitri and Jess are sexual abuse survivors, both have been raped and abused in their past so they come with some very heavy emotional baggage. Ms. Jewel, as usual, sucked me right into these characters, made me feel their pain and kept me championing them through the entire book. I felt the pain of both Dimitri and Jess as they made the journey together to build a trusting relationship that enabled them to open their hearts to each other and lay the past demons to rest. In the end, Dimitri realizes revenge is often a double edged sword. There are some similarities to book 1 but they are definitely not overwhelming. The author delivered a totally different type of relationship and romantic dynamics than the first book.
As usual Bella Jewel has written another 5 star read and I highly recommend this book if you like a strong heroine, an alpha possessive male who needs someone to love him and a storyline that will keep you reading.
I’m looking forward to the next in the series.
5.0 out of 5 stars Revenge and Romance in a Modern Pirate Adventure 21 March 2015
By Sophia Rose - Published on
I planned to read the first book in this series when I read the blurb and as it happens this ended up being the one I got first so I crossed my fingers and dove right in hoping I would be okay to start with book two. Not a problem, but I did get the sense that I might have enjoyed it more (though how that can be possible since I'm pretty amazed already)if I'd got them in order since I felt there was some carryover from book one.

The experience of reading this book ranks pretty high and I dare say I'll be binging on this new to me author's books now that I've read this. Fortunately, I have several from another series and I'll definitely be going back for book one of this one. And why such fervor? It grabbed my attention, it pushed hard at my emotions, it left me breathless and most telling, I could not put it down. I attempted to bookmark it twice and each time, I just couldn't leave it. Things were so intense.

The series is about modern day pirates of the high seas. These folks are ruthless, hard, cunning and oh so much more beneath the surface. In this story, there are two heavily damaged people. At first glance, they seem so different, but as the story progresses they learn that they are very much the same.

<i>I step up on deck and I see him, standing in the corner, gripping the railings so hard his fingers look like they're straining. I take a step toward him, not fulling realizing why I'm here. He's cruel, and awful, and...shit...he's broken. If anyone understands broken, it's me.</i> p. 78 Jess from Where Darkness Lies

The story starts with Dimitri seeking revenge against his step-father, the pirate Hendrix. He uses a woman he saw Hendrix look on with a caring gaze as his bait. Kidnapping Jess was part of his plan to make Hendrix pay for leaving him in that hell all alone after his mom died and never looking back. Only Jess isn't what he expected. She challenges him and pushes him to re-think his plans, but he can't. What does this little pretty thing know about the pain and horror of his past and what it has done to him?

Only Jess knows. It takes one to know one. She wants to hate Dimitri for taking her from her home and wants to kill the only man who cared for her and believed in her since her parents died and she was left with that fiend. But she feels she must try to get through to him that he has it all wrong about Hendrix and that he can't live his life for revenge. She got hers and she knows it doesn't fix anything. In the midst of all that goes on, Jess gets past Dimitri's walls and he gets past hers, but will they ever have a chance if he stays set on killing a man that is family to her?

This book is brutal and gritty. The settings, situations and characters are unapologetically tarnished and live in a different world with a different set of laws. Its a capture romance, but stays on the mild end of the spectrum as its all consensual. The story splits time between being at sea and on land. And tosses in lots of illegal cage fighting and chase scenes for good measure. While the settings and activities were exciting and suspenseful including the real danger Jess is in late in the story from a person in her past, the most compelling part was the slow developing relationship between Dimitri and Jess.

There are so many layers to their relationship- capture/captive, mistrustful acquaintances, cautious lovers and all the slow progressions in between as well as big steps back each time trust is broken. I really liked how the author took her time with their characters and their attraction. There are seething and heavy emotions, passion and lighter moments. While they went through similar experiences, Jess' soul is lighter and less dark and broody like Dimitri's. I appreciated the humor between them even when they were still feeling their way. Jess is hilarious when she's drunk:

<i>"What's wrong with cute?"
"Cute is what you call the guy you don't think is good looking, but you don't want to insult."
I laugh, shaking my head and poking his bottom lip with my finger. "Okay, how about this? You're sexy, hot, smokin', panty-melter, the wetter of pussies everywhere."
He laughs loudly, "Are you f***** serious?"
"People are asking me that a lot tonight." I frown. "And yes, I'm serious. There are many women with uncomfortable vaginas right now because you gave them sex eyes."
His chest is rumbling with laughter and it makes me smile.
"Uncomfortable vaginas, really?"
"It's a very serious issue, Dimitri. Don't blow it off. One serious look from you and boom..." </i> p. 109 Jess and Dimitri from Where Darkness Lies

But the payoff was that intense nail-biter ending. Totally for all the marbles. And the denouement afterward was just the right touch to bring me down and leave me with a smile on my face.

All in all, I was treated to a grand adventure in the spirit of some of the best pirate romances of the past. The authors writing was gripping and her characters compelling. I would definitely recommend this one to those who like their contemporaries to have some dark grittiness and passion.

I received this book as part of a First Reads giveaway on GoodReads, but that did not affect my review.

5 Hotter than Blazes Stars

OK, I LOVE Bella Jewel's stories, yep, I am YELLING that out loud for all to hear! I have been a HUGE fan of hers and a HUGE fan of her books and this series is just freaking amazing!!!!! I thought her biker series was HOT well, these damn pirates are hot as freaking sin in every way possible. Oh yeah and it's not just the guys that are smoking hot, between Indigo from the first book and now Jess in this book, well, hell I have some serious girl crushing going on for BOTH of these amazing heroines:) Oh yes, Dimitri and Jess, OMG, they were like the smallest flame that just roared into an inferno, yep a full blown five alarm fire...... They both had a backstory each that left me so choked up and tears literally running down as I read them each open up to one another, I mean the emotions that they brought out in me while reading was just mind-blowing..... They were literally 2 broken souls that with enough time and caring were able to put each other back together again. I absolutely LOVED catching up with Hendrix and Indi, they too, are just an amazing couple!!!!!!

I would love to see so much more of these couples in the future, like say, well just about everything, hehehe.... I would like to catch up with them to see what has become of their relationships, babies, wink, wink..... hell even catch up on any "weddings" too! Yep I just can' get enough of them because they are all that addicting, in the very best way possible!!!!!!!!!

OK, so as I am trying to come down off of my Bella Jewel "high", PLEASE if you haven't read this series, do yourself a favor and one-click and READ these books.... Hell, please do yourself another favor if you haven't read ANY of Bella Jewel's books, again PLEASE, PLEASE read them ALL!!!! She is an amazing writer and her stories are absolutely fantastic and oh yeah the sex scenes, OMG, literally your girly parts will be tingling up a storm, lololol!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bella Jewel never lets me down! 17 December 2014

I was a huge fan of Enslaved By The Ocean but in my opinion Where Darkness Lies has blown it away. You first meet Dimitri in Enslaved By The Ocean and you want to hate him but you know that he has suffered and he blames his step-father, Hendrix, revenge and rage has fueled him for years. Dimitri thinks that Jess is the way to achieve his goal, little does he know that Jess will do so much more for him than he ever had planned.

Jess is a nurse on Dimitri’s ship but she has a damaged past, one that she believed ruined her from ever having true happiness. When Dimitri kidnaps her she sure as hell doesn’t make things easy for him. Slowly she starts to see beneath Dimitri’s hard exterior and sees that there is more to him than people see.

I loved how both Dimitri and Jess interacted with each other, and that Jess didn’t cower from his intensity. The relationship between them slowly moves from captor/captive to sort of friends and then so much more. Neither person trusts easily, which is understandable but it is beautiful when these two begin to trust each other. Is their relationship perfect? Oh h#$l no! Both make mistakes, Dimitri makes a massive one, one where even reading it the second time (cause yep I had to read it twice it really is that d@&n good) I wish I could have punched him in the balls. I love how this book shows that even in the darkness, a light can break through and not just bring in the light but also bring healing and forgiveness.

I am very curious as to who the next book in this series will be about. I have stated before how much I love Bella Jewel’s books and my love has grown more with Where Darkness Lies. Make sure you read Enslaved By The Ocean first and I promise you that you will love these pirates as much as I have.

4.5 Stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for Rising Indies United 17 December 2014

Review for Rising Indies United

I am loving this series! I will read anything, and everything, that Bella Jewel writes! This was an amazing read. I was not disappointed at all.

This book picks up right where the first one ended. Jess has been kidnapped by Dimitri, Hendrix's step son, who is out for revenge.

Jess's past comes out in this book. We get more details about what happened to her, by her foster father, Roger. She killed Roger, and Hendrix saved her.

Dimitri thinks that everything that has happened to him is Hendrix's fault. We heard what happened to Dimitri, from Hendrix, in the first book. In this book, we hear it from Dimitri.

Both Dimitri and Jess have been through so much. They both move on differently though. Jess still lives, while Dimitri only wants revenge. These two getting together could be great, or it could be a disaster because they are both so messed up. You'll have to read the book to find ot how it works out. And what they do when the past comes back!

"She changed me. She made me see things differently. No matter what I did, she always had a way of coming back at me and completely throwing me. She never showed fear. But she'll be scared now, Indigo. She'll be so f***ing scared."
