A really well written book set in the near future that makes you think about climate change and the power needs we will have.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

A book that makes you thinkReviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 February 2021
Powerful set-up for a thought-provoking seriesReviewed in the United States on 27 December 2020
Susan Kaye Quinn writes with vision and passion in this novella which begins the near-future "hope-punk" series Nothing Is Promised. Our protagonist Lucia is a mid-21st-century power engineer working with renewable energy infrastructure off the California coast and hoping to be formally adopted by the new-style family she's staying with when she discovers that something is very wrong at her workplace which produces the power that her "family" depends on. This is the most real-world story of SKQ's that I have read and I found it most compelling - I've already pre-ordered the second book in the series. After the unbelievable year we've all been through this is an intriguing look at a dangerous but credible and ultimately hopeful future for humanity.
A Fascinating Look at the FutureReviewed in the United States on 13 February 2021
This story is the first of four. Like a trilogy, it doesn't exactly end, so I was left feeling incomplete and wanting more, in the best way. I love the world building in this. It's heavy on science and technology, and a glimpse at what our future could actually look like. Between climate change and the need for power to fuel all the things we've come to need in life...the way they've tackled the problem in this story feels real. The way family is defined is fascinating too. Quinn calls this hope punk. It does have that feel of hope, even in the middle of the mysterious Things happening. It's not dystopian, it's steampunk, without the steam, set in the future not the past. Looking forward to reading how this story plays out!
The Story the World Needs Right NowReviewed in the United States on 25 November 2020
When you had power is a touching story of what it means to finally find a place to call home in a world set in the not too distant future that is an illustration of where our planet could be headed. I found the characters unique and distinctive in their own right, the mystery at the center of the story to be engaging and of course, felt a strong sense of hope at the close of the tale. Highly recommend to all who are looking for something uplifting to read.
What a Start!Reviewed in the United States on 27 November 2020
Loved this. The story had me reading, drawn in from the first line. The plot developed rapidly as did the characters. Ms Quinn has an amazing ability to draw in the reader and keep them hooked, long past their bedtimes, and wanting more. Book ended on a wonderful note as well. Part one certainly not disappoint. Cannot wait for next part.
