There’s one point where it talks about how one doesn’t have to over-rehearse. And I was thinking, yeah, great in theory, but when I write I always find better words and I express myself much more eloquently and concisely. So learning my speech by heart helps me express myself better. If I have to think on my feet my mind just doesn’t find words as good as those... But then I got it - that’s the whole point here. I don’t have to be my most eloquent self. Impact won't come from using those perfect words I’ve written down. I'm totally allowed to be my nervous, flawed, real self. What matters is that I stay in touch with the drive behind what I’m talking about - and that's what will come through and move the audience.
So yes, this book is a very practical guide, with great tips on every page. It teaches a mental frame of thinking about speaking that 1) inspires/teaches you to create an effective message, 2) increases comfort about speaking in general, and 3) offers many specific ideas on how to improve the presentation of the content of your speech.
It also contains numerous interesting personal anecdotes from the author and his work with his clients, as well as his unique take on various pop-culture memes. He has some fresh thoughts on why some popular marketing messages & speeches worked, while others didn't, which gave me quite a few aha-moments. All in all, a very helpful and enriching read on many levels.
I've been looking for a comprehensive resource for developing my skills in public speaking and i have FINALLY found it.
here are 7 reasons why this book has helped me so much!
1.) helped me understand theory behind public speaking
2.) walked me through public speaking myths and debunked them
3.) took me through a journey of the value and importance to take time to vet out my core message and how with greater clarity comes greater confidence
4.) walked me through step by step, on how to conduct my message with greater clarity.
5.) helped me get excited with my next speaking engagement instead of dreading it
6.) opened my eyes and understanding of the value and art of messaging and how to look for good and bad messaging in all mediums (advertisement, marketing, corporate communication, interviews, speeches, etc.. etc.)
7.) helped me understand i don't have to strive to become some other person, that my own natural style is what i need to strive for
I recommend this book for anyone who…
1.) is wanting to develop better public speaking skills
2.) wants to understand the importance of messaging and how to craft clear concise messages that has true impact (leaders, business owners, teachers, lectures, families… practically anyone, lol!)
Pick this book up! You won’t be disappointed. I sure wasn’t!
