5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book 13 March 2016

I really enjoyed this book. It surprised me cause it wasn't like your typical vampire book. Yes, there was romance but it wasn't sappy and there is some violence but nothing grotesque or over the top. I really liked how the author made me care about the characters fate and left me wanting more. I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars To quote the favourite food chain in the book, “I’m lovin’ it!” 2 April 2016

In a funny twist of fate, I’m munching down on a McDonald’s Big Mac while writing a review about a book filled with McDonald’s meal slipped in between the pages.

Once again, I’ve started reading without an aid of a synopsis. It’s really fun that way, believe me. I just went by the title and book cover. Just like in my previous reviews, I get a mental picture of the story based on movies or TV programs I’ve watched before. What Lies Beneath...sounds like a suspense-horror story especially with a picture of a knife on the cover.

Then I started reading about the lives of Mila and her brother, Jax, and a vampire named Landon. As I read on, my first impression of the book was completely different to that of the actual story.

I was thrown into the world of vampires and demons and the secret lives they live in the world of puny human beings. And yes, one could say: just another vampire story blah-blah-blah. But every story is different because it was told by a different storyteller and that’s what makes it special. One thing I can say is: the author has a quirky way with her telling. Sentences were short. And just stops. And repeat. Initially, it was off-putting but after I while, I got used to the style and didn’t really notice it as I got into the meat of the story.

I’m not gonna bore you by telling you the entire plot of the book. If you want to find out, buy the book and read it. What I’m gonna tell you is that I really enjoyed the banter between the three main characters from the beginning until the very last page. The pace of the story moved along quite steadily and there were loads of action thrown into the mix. A lot of people died. A LOT.

There are also a lot of steamy scenes that got me hot and bothered. QUITE A FEW. Landon is just sooo dreamy. For a dead man, he can certainly make your pulses race! Whew! Ooookay...moving on.

There were a few typos here and there but not enough to put me off. The use of the term “familiar” in context with vampire is also new to me. There were far too many reference to McDonald’s and made me wish the author could have been a bit more adventurous and tried “In-n-Out” or “Waffle House” maybe. But again, those didn’t stop me from enjoying the read, so much so that I stayed up all night and had to admit defeat in favour of sleep, only to pick it up as soon as my eyes opened to the new light of day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Once this story gets rolling, you will enjoy their adventures. 28 March 2016

I originally had trouble with this book mainly because of how the sentence structure was laid out. No real complex sentences and I likened it to reading how William Shatner spoke. As the book went on I got into it and the sentence structure was at the back of my mind.

So in this story we have a story of Mila and Landon and her brother Jax. I was on the fence about Mila the whole time I read this book. I knew this was her life with her brother but she could have been a little more mature about things. She was barely 18 so maybe she did have some things going for her. Her brother seemed dumber than a box of rocks at time but he loved his sister and did anything for her so I admire that.

Ohhh and let me tell you about the studly vampire with morals! I really loved Landon. I felt bad he was traveling the earth alone for almost 400 years. Hell bent on revenge. He fell instantly for Mila. He had such a strong moral compass holding onto traditions from his human days. There is some action and lots of killing In this book but hey its also a love story. Absolutely loved the epilogue. Also bonus points for referencing the 10th Doctors catchphrase! Let's not forget the Carry on my Wayward Son in the beginning because hello I'm a huge Supernatural fan. I wonder if Mila was chosen by the author because of the name Mina in the Dacula stories or is this just something I noticed. Good job!!!!

Once this story gets rolling you will enjoy their adventures.
5.0 out of 5 stars Vampire's, Demons and Revenge 13 June 2016

I will start off by saying that, I have never read a book that has a vampire character in; I’ve not even read twilight even though I have seen the films! Don’t judge me, I have nothing against vampire books, I just hadn’t read any until this book (what lies beneath)

I also would like to add that I absolutely adore mila! I felt like I had to see where her story went, to me she came across as kind of a lost soul. She knew what she wanted but she didn’t know how to get it, and when she finally talked jaxon into going to their original home and living there, jaxon was kidnapped!

Mila and her big brother Jaxon have never settled in one place too long. They have travelled around nearly all of Mila’s life, now they are in Vegas for Mila’s Eighteenth. What Mila thought would be a fun few days resulted in her big brother, her only family being kidnapped by Demon’s because of a stupid spur of the moment action coming back to haunt her! Mila thought it was easy pickings stealing a wallet off of the evil Knox, but it turned out to be a useless information book that she shoves in her bag and forgets about until Jaxon is kidnapped and his life depends on her remembering the information from that book! She teams up with a vampire called Landon and after a rocky start they seem to hit it off. Until he met Mila, Landon had pretty much been alone for the 400 years of his life/vampire-ness? Has he finally met his match with Mila? Will they get Jaxon back,. ALIVE?! Will Landon finally get his revenge?
P.S If I could have a real life vampire boyfriend ( that obviously wouldn’t kill me) it would be Landon!

Ms Thorn has got huge talent. She successfully draws you into this epic read from the very beginning. The characters, brother and sis duo, and the hunk of a vampire Landon, were all extremely likeable. I am a sucker for strong intelligent female heroines, and Thorn definitely delivers. Not only strong, but sassy, witty and spunky, beyond her years, is the protagonist Milla Moody. Laugh out loud at much of the dialogue and her way of thinking. I absolutely loved her personality and character.

The writing was as smooth as butter, and it had the perfect amount of description to get the point across... no fluff, no extras. Definitely an excellent highly entertaining modern sci-fi fantasy. You can’t go wrong with this, and I look forward to more from Ms Thorn.
