Product Description

What if you had a second chance to meet someone for the first time?

Cal Logan is shocked to see Nicole Bentley sitting across from him at a coffee shop thousands of miles from their hometown. After all, no one has seen or heard from her since they graduated over a year ago.

Except this girl isn't Nicole.

She looks exactly like Cal's shy childhood crush, but her name is Nyelle Preston and she has no idea who he is. This girl is impulsive and daring, her passion for life infectious. The complete opposite of Nicole. Cal finds himself utterly fascinated-and falling hard. But Nyelle is also extremely secretive. And the closer he comes to finding out what she's hiding, the less he wants to know.

When the secrets from the past and present collide, one thing becomes clear: Nothing is what it seems.

Often I will read a book and fall in love with it’s characters, the plot, certain scenes or beautiful quotes. Rarely, do I come away from a novel feeling deeply moved by its message. This was one of those times. Ms. Donovan used the pages of her new novel and it’s intricate characters as her linguistic canvas. Blank to fill with messages of hope, of love and most importantly, of life. Of living. Reflecting back on What If, I cannot recall a single moment where I was bored by useless dialogue or the materialistic and unrealistic scenarios that usually have me turning pages aimlessly. Every exchange, setting and symbol had meaning and the title of the book sums it up perfectly.

The words ‘What If’ can have different connotations, depending on the context in which they are used.

What If I never travelled alone?
What If I never took that chance?
“What if I had done it differently. Who would I be? What would my life be like. What if…”

They convey a silent meaning to each and every individual and good or bad, everyone has their own ‘What If’ moments.

This novel masterfully encapsulates the positives and the negatives of taking chances – whether they be for better or for worse. It explores the complexities of life through multiple perspectives and takes readers on a journey through different, yet equally pivotal moments in time. This unique take to the New Adult contemporary scene is like a breath of fresh air and each character who speaks has their own distinguishable voice, as if they were literally coming alive from the page.

Along with the positive messages it sends to readers, What If also tells a tale of mystery, interwoven with infallible friendships and something that many authors seem to miss: nostalgia.

Not what l was expecting! I love Rebecca Donovan and especially the breathing series. This book was good don't get me wrong but the build up to the twist is the entire book and l guess l was expecting a bigger twist than what it was... And l kind of guessed what the actual twist was half way through... I just thought there would be more to it?

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful love story bt author Rebecca Donovan 8 April 2015

*A wonderful love story by author Rebecca Donovan who has not only accomplished the story of true love but combined it with comedy, tenderness and a fantasy come true. It keeps you guessing as the mystery is finally revealed............Cal Logan always considered himself a geek growing up and it was evident at the time. In fact if it wasn't for the friendship of his three best friends, Rae, Nicole and Richelle, he would have lost his mind between all the bullying he had to endure day after day. But those days are over since he now was older. He was tall, dark and downright handsome with an incredible body made for sin in which even today, nobody recognized him as he sat with Rae at an outing watching all his former classmates from high school. When she left all those years ago, Cal was praying that Nicole Bentley would be there with her gorgeous blue eyes looking at him but she wasn't and neither was Richelle. Cal returned to Crenshaw, his college by choice in upstate New York and was attending a party when he first saw her. She was in a cat costume wearing a hideous mask and yet, there was something very familiar about her that made his heart skip a beat. He just stood there and when she slowly turned around to look at him, Cal went into overdrive because he was looking into the eyes of Nicole Bentley. Was it really her? If so, what was she doing in Crenshaw when she was supposed to be at Harvard going under the name of Nicole Bentley? Cal knew or even hoped for dear life that she was Nicole so eventually when she showed up at his favorite hangouts, he was convinced. She thought he was hysterical too because Cal , not once asked a girl out instead they asked him out and then he would take off running in the opposite direction. Nyelle finally asked him one day why he feared relationships? He was waiting for his "what if girl"? Cal wondered how in the blazes did she figure that one out but she did and he was determined to solve the riddle of Nicole/Nyelle if his life depended on it and he wasn't going to give up until he had all the answers. As their friendship continues and he learns all the answers, he is tormented by the truth but terrified because he has fallen in love for the second time in his life with the girl with the gorgeous blue eyes. Is she the "what if girl"?........thank you♡♡

5.0 out of 5 stars I love piecing this beautiful story together. Pure magic. 17 September 2014

I'm in a state a wonder. Trying to grab onto pieces of the story I deem clues to help tie this mystery together. Cal remembers a girl name Nicole from HS, but this girl is named Nyelle. Yet they share the same eyes and laugh. It's cryptic. The story is still unfolding.
Pieces at a time are disclosed about Nicolle and Richelle's past. Pure tortue having to wait for information, I'm still trying to figure out what I'm reading. It's also very satisfying reading a story I know nothing about. It's rewarding to read the unknown. It's like reading two stories simultaneously. The past references are about Rae, Cal, Richelle, and Nicole, yet I feel like they are different people. Maybe because of how young they are and what information is given about them. I'm am truly touched by this story. Read it in one sitting. Could not put it down. I needed answers and now that I have them I do want to read it again. This time I can read without the wonder and focus on other aspects. It was beautiful.
5.0 out of 5 stars Quietly Beautiful 20 September 2014

Quietly beautiful, reserved and mysterious, What If is a story of second chances and secrets. It's a tale of transformation and revelation. Rebecca Donovan delivers something truly excellent.

When I first read the synopsis for this story, I originally thought it would be an edgy, second-chance romance, something a bit different than what I'm used to, but still within my wheelhouse. This story was more. I was only a few chapters in when I got that feeling. You know that feeling? It's indescribable. The one a book addict gets when they just know that a book is going to be good. The tingling down your spine, the fluttering in your stomach. The book butterflies.

What surprised be about this book was that it wasn't just a love story. What If was a story of friendship and growing up. I can't give too much of a backstory because the pasts of Cal and Nyelle were shrouded in secrets, which unfold slowly throughout the book. The story is told using multiple points of views, but the majority of it is viewed through Cal's eyes, with crucial flashbacks that add to the mystery and intricacies of the plot.

I absolutely loved reading from Cal's POV, since other than the occasional companion novel, I don't get to experience romance through the hero's POV much. Cal's a sweetheart. A former gawky teenager with three girl best friends, Cal is now a swoon-worthy hunk, breaking hearts all over campus. He's only loved one girl, a girl who turned her back on their friendship and then disappeared. Now Cal believes that the crazy, impulsive, mysterious girl who calls herself Nyelle is that same girl from his past. Is she? Well, I can't tell you that!

What I can tell you is that the push and pull between Cal and Nyell was what intrigued me. I felt Cal's desperation. He was overjoyed one minute, then terrified the next. For about 70% of this book, I was as confused as Cal, trying to figure out what the hell was going on. The mystery of Nyell's background was an interesting twist in the story, but that wasn't the only thing that pulled me in. I loved reading about this group of friends. Secrets and lies tore them apart, and it was thrilling, and heartbreaking to see the secrets untangle.

What If is like a delicate lace. It's beautifully woven, intricately layered, transparent, yet still concealing. I really enjoyed this novel, in fact, I read it twice before I wrote this review, and it was even better the second time around. This is simply a quality novel; well-written, and touching. I highly recommend that you read it!

P.S. I think that readers who enjoyed The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay would enjoy What If. They're both quietly emotional, and they both evoked similar feelings in me.

P.P.S. I need this story to become an audio production. This is one that I'd definitely listen to while rolling down I-95.

She is now a part of my favorite authors list. Spellbound. I'm just spellbound.

This book started off a little slow and confusing for me. It was tough to follow at first especially after having just finished the "breathing" series. The scope was much different.

That being said...I'm so glad I hung on! If you are considering NOT reading this or not continuing it's a horrible mistake. This book is incredible. Absolutely incredible. It reminds me of the onion. Slowly peeling back layers and layers to expose the next layer.

Highly recommend. Fantastic book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a journey! 30 August 2016

So, I'm a huge fan of Rebecca Donovan! I wish she had more books for me to plow through. I waited a while between reading the Breathe Series and reading What If. I guess I was trying to save something for later. In between, I devoured everything Colleen Hoover. Her awesomeness can't be explained. Anyway, before I get to far off topic, I finished this last night. It was great, I had my doubt's, but she didn't disappoint. I'm so glad the plot wasn't ridiculous and silly. That was my worry. Two girls who look just alike, gotta be another separated at birth, twins fiasco. It's not, so don't worry. It was such a tale to unravel and very rewarding, in doing so. Nicole and Cal aren't the only subjects here for you to unravel. There Richelle, who is a huge part of the plot and there's Rae, who I loved.
Nicole disappears after senior year for about a year and a girl who looks strikingly like her turns up at Cal's university. Cal, having always had a thing for Nicole, is instantly drawn in by her doppelganger. She turns out to be everything Nicole wasn't, adventurous and thrilling. Through his flashbacks and point of view of the other characters, the past unravels very very slowly, guys! There's a lot of angst, a lot! It's totally worth it in the end! Very good read, I loved every second of it.
