What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding: A Memoir Kindle Edition
“What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is kind of like if Eat, Pray, Love were written by your funniest friend.”—Rachel Dratch
Kristin Newman spent much of her twenties and thirties buying dresses to wear to her friends’ weddings and baby showers. Not ready to settle down and in need of an escape from her fast-paced job as a sitcom writer, Kristin instead traveled the world, often alone, for several weeks each year. In addition to falling madly in love with the planet, Kristin fell for many attractive locals, men who could provide the emotional connection she wanted without costing her the freedom she desperately needed.
Kristin introduces readers to the Israeli bartenders, Finnish poker players, sexy Bedouins, and Argentinean priests who helped her transform into “Kristin-Adjacent” on the road–a slower, softer, and, yes, sluttier version of herself at home. Equal parts laugh-out-loud storytelling, candid reflection, and wanderlust-inspiring travel tales, What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is a compelling debut that will have readers rushing to renew their passports.

- Reviewed in Australia on 11 August 2014Verified PurchaseI love everything about this book, as someone who has traveled the world while her friends and family are settling down having babies and what not I could totally relate to what Kristin was talking about! I've recommended this to all my friends and people I've met while travelling!

Verified PurchaseDidn't know what to expect going into reading this book. I thought maybe it was a self help guide to being independent and single. But after reading the sample on my kindle, I realized I couldn't have been more wrong. In a good way! This book is above all things honest. Kristin shares openly about her experiences in a way that is real and relatable but she absolutely does not tell you how to live your life. It's exactly what it says on the tin: a memoir. Very refreshing and actually laugh out loud funny! I couldn't stop myself laughing even in very public settings which at times was slightly embarrassing! However, on a more serious note, her adventures make you reconsider your priorities and how you see yourself in relation to your peers. Just in her telling her story, you can't help but do a bit of introspection along the way.

Verified PurchaseFirstly, you need to know that the author writes for sitcoms, therefore meaning you will undoubtedly laugh multiple times. For me, this novel was responsible for series of stifled fits of laughter, as I read it while riding the bus to and from work. At the time, I was living and working in England, watching as the rest of the people in my life settled down to have families; this novel was the little voice that made it OK to be doing my own thing when the rest of my world would sooner have me home, married off, and breeding. Would I recommend it? Highly. In fact, I just gifted a hardcopy to a recently divorced friend who is now taking to her own adventure working abroad. This novel is for any woman with a sense of adventure and who is in need of a laugh.

Verified PurchaseBought this book after it being recommended to me. I'm usually a rather impatient person and I often don't end up finishing a book, but with this gem it's different. I travel a lot and I always take it with me, I've read it three or four times by now and I always love the story.
