Trevor Royle & Ian Archer - We’ll Support You Evermore: The Impertinent Saga of Scottish Fitba
Thus book was published in 1976 and should also be considered as a historical piece as well as a football book. It focuses on the game and the football issues of the time and leaves the reader over forty years later wondering what has really changed in that time.
Consisting of a number of essays and short stories from a range of writers it covers a range of topics. Included within it is a description of a PR professional at Ibrox who would unilaterally withdraw press facilities from reporters believed to have been critical of Rangers as a club. It contains pieces on how the players of the then Scottish national team despite their skill and wearing the same jersey consistently gave the impression of not recognising each other on the pitch. Sadly there is even an essay on the peccadilloes of the Scottish football fan who takes out the defeats of his team on his wife in the immediate aftermath of the match. Remember this was published in 1976.
I will freely admit this may be one for the football anoraks but it does speak primarily on a key aspect of our culture. It starts on certain occasions with the stereotype and builds from that. It leaves the reader especially if that reader is not Scottish with the conundrum as to what comes first the stereotype or the culture? It certainly creates the impression that for some football is the integral part of living rather than just an aspect of it.
Enjoyable for me? Yes. Reflective of us as a nation? Possibly. Confirmation that for some of us life and people do not really change? Definitely. In that forty year plus period we have had two female Prime Ministers. A black man has been President of the United States. The Berlin Wall has been brought down and the Soviet Union no longer exists. But despite those auspicious changes we still see that Rangers are still banning journalists believed to have reported negative things about the club.
