**Update- after two weeks of normal operation this product has developed a data corruption issue and is now unusable. I had to delete and re-download all files to other drives as they are corrupted. Researching this issue I found that this is apparently a common problem with the P50. But they’re still selling these defective drives. I have never had any problems with Western Digital external drives. Very disappointed. Will be returning for a refund. Do not risk your data with this drive!!**
“Original post”- As advertised. Fast transfer rate and decreased load time. Seamless console integration. IMO best expandable storage for this purpose currently. Worth the money but obviously would have preferred to pay less.

Poor quality external SSD that doesn't not perform As stated in product description. This device has a MAJOR flaw that affects its performance when used with a gaming console. The device will automatically go into sleep & will not wake up when plugged into game console. User must manually unplug & replug the device to the game console before the SSD can be recognised & be usable again. This is ridiculous and makes the use of the slated "Gaming SSD" redundant.
WD Support AU (or wherever in the world their call is actually based) on this issue is both inadequate and horrendous. Their poorly trained support agents are both uneducated & unhelpful.
DO NOT BUY THIS SSD! IT IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME & MONEY!

Very fast speeds when you first start transferring files over. However, once you reach 3+ TBs, the speed becomes unbearable when you add more stuff. It would freeze my computer, and I have to force restart in order for my pc to work. I have a steam library of over 1000 games and had to reformat the drive in order to get it working again.

Ah! le marketing quant tu nos tiens , bien loin des performances annoncés (javais cru c’était la nouvelle techologie d’écriture mais non) , en plus l'appellation est mensongère car il tourne 5400rpm une fois démonté c'est ni plus ni moins un Blue!!!, référence l'intérieur du couvert , sauf erreur de ma part la série black et mon ancien black tournent a 7200rpm , j'ai un vieux Hitachi que fait 30% mieux en vitesse de transfert, que ce disque dur, pour ma part ça ne dépasse pas 98mb/s. Je l'ai acheté en reconditionné donc le prix était a l'hauteur des autres marques, vaut pas plus. Pour le reste c'est vrai qui est Black! (de couleur noir)
NB: il est impossible de le remplacer car soudé au boiter et la connectique spécifique USB soudé directement au circuit imprimé, pas de sata.

Hallo. Ich habe 2 der 3TB Xbox Platten für 82 € und 84 € hier gekauft, was inklusive 2 Monaten Gamepass Ultimate für eine schnelle 3TB Platte sicher ein ganz guter Kurs ist. Und noch dazu sehen die Platten recht gut aus, auch wenn ich einen schwarzen statt weißen Rand bevorzugt hätte, und die Oberseite scheinbar auch aus Kunststoff ist und nicht Aluminium, wie einige berichten. Warum also die Abwertung und die Warnung an die Xbox Besitzer? Ganz einfach, weil Western Digital hier ein Produkt als Xbox-Produkt bewirbt (sogar mit Xbox Logo), welches einwandfrei aber nur an anderen Geräten funktioniert, aber eben nicht an einer Xbox! Zum einen schaltet sich beim Betrieb an der Xbox die LED der Festplatte niemals ab (scheinbar weil der Strom am USB Ausgang nicht gekappt wird wenn die Konsole aus ist). Zum anderen muss man extrem aufpassen dass die Festplatte nicht einfach weiterdreht wenn die Konsole aus ist. Trennt man sie nämlich einmal von der Konsole (damit die sehr helle LED nicht mehr nervt), muss man ins Energiemenü der Xbox, und einmal den Haken raus und wieder rein bei dem Punkt dass die Festplatte mit abschalten soll. Ansonsten läuft sie bei mir munter weiter! Und Western Digital sagt das sei alles ganz normal, und man solle halt die Platte immer abklemmen wenn die Xbox aus ist. Viel Spaß dabei die Platte dann immer abzuziehen während sie noch läuft! Am PC und an der PS4 geht die Platte samt LED übrigens normal aus. An der Xbox, wofür sie gedacht ist, nur Probleme. Und 2 andere, normale PC-Platten funktionieren aber perfekt an der Xbox? Mag ja sein dass Festplatten sich beim Ausschalten unterschiedlich verhalten, aber wenn man merkt dass eine Platte nicht wirklich mit der Xbox harmoniert, vermarktet man sie nicht extra als Xbox-Festplatte. Da komme ich mir als Kunde dann irgendwie verarscht vor und überlege auch die eine wieder zurückzugeben. Am PC funktioniert sie schließlich normal.

The short story is: this drive is impossible to shuck because it doesn't have a SATA interface and the USB control board is soldered on.

Follow the pictures attached for details. Opening the drive is very easy. Use a 2mm hex screwdriver on each of the four corners of the aluminum plate. Gently pry the plate up and off, there will be some resistance because it's held in place by four gentle adhesive strips. From there, pop out the four plastic tabs which are holding the drive in the enclosure. At this point, you can effortlessly lift the drive up and out of the enclosure.

Upon inspection, I found a Western Digital drive with a model number of "WD50NMZW". The interface is USB and the control board soldered on. It's possible the developer re-used old controller board design, because as you look to the left of the USB port, you see solder points that match a SATA port, in the location where you'd expect to find a port.

In any case, I learned what I needed, put the drive back together and now it serves me as an external USB drive.

update, 25 October 2020: Still using it, still works great.

Normal performances drive in an expensive shell

Bought this at a little more than the same price of entry-level drives with a black Friday offer. The drive comes in a nice black metal shell, but no carrying bag or anything else but the bare drive and cable are provided. I have been pretty disappointed by the performances; from the name and gaming marketing I supposed this contained a black series 7200rpm drive, while it's a simple 5400rpm one. Claims over 100MB/s while reading, I verified the number in a benchmark test (big file, continuous read) but real life numbers are a lot smaller, up to 50MB/s read for a number of large files and while transferring smaller files to the drive (I use it for high resolution pictures storage) you'll see the usual 30MB/s that you can reach more or less with any magnetic unit on the market right now. Overall it works, no software issues, no power issues even with an old computer that sometimes failed to give enough power to other usb drives, but buy this one only if it's on offer or if in your eyes the looks justify the premium price otherwise you can go with any other lower-price solution and you likely won't see any difference.
