This was a great start to the series. I loved the characters, and how their flaws and insecurities, and other aspects of their pasts, were slowly revealed. The connection between Starlee and the Wayward Sons (George, Charlie, Jake and Dexter) is evident and beautifully written. I really enjoyed watching Starlee slowly come out of her shell and move past her anxieties. I also liked that the guys were broken too - and that she helped make them better - it wasn't one sided. They weren't perfect, and neither was she, but together it worked.
The only thing I think could have been done better was the explanation about Starlee's past, and the darkness that caused her mother to pull her out of school to protect her. It went from being described in some detail at the start, to Starlee saying she didn't remember much of that time at the end. It contradicted itself given the whole story was told from her POV. It was also hard to tell how bad her anxieties were now - whether they were debilitating, or whether it was more her mother's influence and fear showing through. A better explanation of this would have helped, as would more details about whether she was still medicated as that was mentioned in passing yet wasn't part of her daily routine. I also found it odd that no-one commented on the scars she surely would have had from her cutting - surely they would have been noticeable with her wearing tank tops and swimwear.
Other than that, it was an interesting and heartwarming story. I look forward to reading the next book.
I was really surprised I enjoyed this book. I normally prefer harder, rougher type books, but this story was a delight. Easy to read and well written. Getting to know the main character, seeing how she views life, before and after her move has been a real education for me. My sons girlfriend has anxiety problems, and this has opened my eyes to everyday situations that she encounters that gives her such fears, that most of us just meet head on. I'm looking forward to the next instalment and will be looking at other books by this author. Thanks for a great read.
Another well written and edited book by Angel Lawson. Her books pull me in from the start and this book was no exception. It gives all the feels whilst keeping you poised to see what happens next. Starlee and the Wayward boys as well as the many support characters are engaging and lovable. I found them all so endearing and can’t wait to see what happens with them in the next book. A must read.
I loved this book. I'm not a fan of contemporary stories but I admit this book was interesting, it really grabbed me. Well written and enjoyable the story stands out. Definitely a series I want to continue.
