This book is all about 'verminicity' - acting like a Rat in the workplace to achieve your evil ends. Our writer is a bit of an anti hero - no morals to speak of but he certainly pulls no punches when describing the dirty tricks you can play, or can be played on you in the corporate game.
I can't recommend this book as a guide - I don't have the stomach for amoral activites conducted purely for the benefit of the self. That said, I am no saint, and if only as a way of understanding your enemy and defending yourself, it might be worth dipping in.
Schrivers kicks us off with an self audit - we get to work out if we are innocent 'stupid rats', vulnerable to the shenanigans around us or 'clever rats' who have some of the tricks of the trade, but have more to learn. He has a word of caution for the 'filthy rats', those who have mastered his techniques - can they sleep at night?
He highlights when to be vigilant - if you are in an environment where aims are ambiguous, interests are conflicting and change is a-coming, then watch out - rats are likely to be about.
He describes all sorts of sources of power - whether it's the ability to control supply, demand or rules or the ability to capture interests and opinions.
His top tip - if you are going to play the game, you have to be prepared to lose, and if you lose, you have to be prepared to leave the field.
Enlightening.
