Product Description

As a member of a wealthy and influential family, Jaime “Jamie” Abello had his life mapped out. Being shipped off to LA with an insurance scam linked to his name was not part of his plan.

It had seemed so simple: pass the Philippines Medical Board Exam;practice in the family-owned and -controlled hospital; join the Board by age forty; and find a partner with whom he could settle down and be himself.

Instead, his father supplies him with a surfeit of money and dangerous secrets and sends him to a strange country.

The Pediatric Residency Program Jamie applies for brings him face to face with untouchable
Program Director, Miles Kwon, whom Jamie soon finds to be a man of integrity and vision.

When tragedy strikes, Jamie finds himself falling deeper into depression. Unexpectedly, it’s
Miles who helps him work through his pain.

Will Jamie ever experience a life with a loving partner, or will his father's secrets cause him to lose everything he’s gained?

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read 19 February 2016

Jamie Abello's dreams of becoming a doctor are nearly ruined when he is abruptly sent away from his home country of the Philippines by his father to start a new life in the United States. His step-mother and half brothers are involved in insurance fraud that could potentially send his father to prison. In an effort to protect his son, Jamie's father urges him to start a new life in Los Angeles where he can begin his residency in pediatrics and stay away from the drama at home. Even though his family life is in turmoil, Jamie somehow manages move forward while in L.A., but things are about to become much more complicated when he is introduced to his hot new boss, Dr. Miles Kwon.

I really enjoyed this short story! It had a great mix of mystery, tension, friendship and romance. The characters are very likable and seem true to life. The only thing that made me uncomfortable was the way that the assistant of Jamie's father, Letty, was described. It bothered me a little that she was essentially characterized as ugly, but was good to keep around because she was intelligent and had a good head on her shoulders. I also found it odd that all of the women who were considered beautiful in this book were blonde and blue-eyed. Then there is Letty, whom Jamie makes sure to tell us is dark-skinned (morena in the Philippines) and large, who is considered unattractive. In the end, after being Jamie's father's right-hand person and confidant, Letty was reduced to being a maid/house mother for Jamie and his housemates.

It took a while to warm up to Dr. Kwon, but I completely understand why. Readers were learning about and getting to know Dr. Kwon right along with Jamie, so finally seeing the real Miles was a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rating: 3.5* 1 March 2016

So, it was a different start to a book than your typical beginning of a romance book. It was a slightly convoluted for a plot that didn't have a massive impact on the storyline in my opinion. However, it does grab into the book and does keep you interested.

Jamie has had to leave his home and his country in order to be protected from his family. Training to be a doctor whilst his father tries to clear his name, he finds his place in the world as he thrives in his role and meets Miles, his programme director. This is not an insta-romance and it takes a while for things to build between them as their positions and uncertainties get in the way.

Whilst I enjoyed reading this and liked the characters, I didn't feel that we got under the characters' skins enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Read 18 February 2016

This is a sweet story about a young doctor, cast adrift from just about everything he's known his entire life. He's in a new country, serving his residency, and on top of everything else, the past catches up with him in a way.

Yet despite all of the above, he deals with the problems, and finds love in the process.

I really enjoyed reading this multicultural story! It was engaging with lovable characters and the plot had everything I want... suspense, drama and romance. I love the sensuous scenes and the karaoke bits were just endearing :)
3.0 out of 5 stars I readjusted my expectations and enjoyed it as a nice 5 April 2016

From the set-up at the beginning (main character has to leave his home country because family members have committed fraud and are trying to pin the crime on him), I expected a little more high drama. It was a surprisingly mellow book given that set-up. Once I understood the focus wasn't really on the crime but on Jaime getting used to living in a different country and adjusting to his new work culture, I readjusted my expectations and enjoyed it as a nice, quick read about two good, thoughtful men who are well-suited for each other. I liked that they got along and there weren't any major misunderstandings between the couple. The issue was more that they were both reserved and had to get over that reserve in order to open their hearts to each other.
