Dungeon of the Mad Mage is very much a specialist product. Unlike Curse of Strahd or other adventure settings, this entire book is contained within Undermountain. There are 23 levels, spanning from characters 5th level all the way to 20th. There are indeed some varied situations and perils here, including Drow, Gith, Mind Flayers and more, but they are all fundamentally levels of the same cake.
Thus it is a specialist product indeed, most useful for groups who want to do a long dungeon crawl. There is some variation at times with NPC negotiation and puzzles, but primarily this is a cave crawler focusing on combat. I am sure there will groups who will do the whole thing over a span of months, even years, but I am sure others like I will take sections or ideas from this as inspiration for our own ideas.
The maps are serviceable in the retro black and white line art style. I prefer the more detailed maps from other adventures, but I suppose they fit well enough here.
Therefore I give this 4 stars for what it is, but only buy this if you are sure it is what you want.
