Being distracted by life I was finding it a bit difficult to get into this - I got confused by the many characters and couldn't quite see where the story line was going. Snippets of wonderful descriptive writing kept me going, knowing that I would find more nuggets. And I'm glad I did for the story, full of mystery and quirkiness, is a story for our time, telling, as it does, the tale of the rise of fascism, and of loss and grief. It's not what you would call a cheerful read for that reason, but it is an important one.
