Watching (The Making of Riley Paige—Book 1) Kindle Edition
--Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos (re Once Gone)
WATCHING (The Making of Riley Paige—Book One) is book #1 in a new psychological thriller series by #1 bestselling author Blake Pierce, whose free bestseller Once Gone (Book #1) has received over 1,000 five star reviews.
22 year old psychology major—and aspiring FBI agent—Riley Paige finds herself in a battle for her life as her closest friends on campus are abducted and killed by a serial killer. She senses that she, too, is being targeted—and that if she is to survive, she must apply her brilliant mind to stop the killer herself.
When the FBI hits a dead end, they are impressed enough by Riley’s keen insight into the killer’s mind to allow her to help. Yet the killer’s mind is a dark, twisted place, one too diabolical to make sense of, and one that threatens to bring Riley’s fragile psyche crashing down. In this deadly game of cat and mouse, can Riley survive unscarred?
It is also a standalone series, and you do not need to have read the Riley Paige series to jump into this series--which starts at the beginning!
An action-packed thriller with heart-pounding suspense, WATCHING is book #1 in a riveting new series that will leave you turning pages late into the night. It takes readers back 20 plus years—to how Riley’s career began—and is the perfect complement to the ONCE GONE series (A Riley Paige Mystery), which includes 16 books and counting.

It pains me to say this but I was really disappointed with this novella. The start of the story felt like the author was speaking and dumbing down the explanations to you, with a glaring mistake made regarding "murderers have no emotions, no empathy"! Surely the author means psychopaths/serial killers? To make matters worse the exciting lead up to the ending was marred by another big mistake in scenes that totally contradicted each other. All in all this felt like it needed a damn good edit before being released as an ebook.

When she decides to retrace the victims movements, she finds herself getting deeper and deeper into the killers mind and ends up putting herself not only on the police and FBI radar but also the killers. As the killer strikes again, she is once again unwittingly thrown into the centre of the investigation and becomes even more determined to help the police catch this killer.
There are lots of twists and turns in the story has you so gripped and invested in the story that you keep telling yourself "just one more chapter and I'll stop for the night" and before you know it it's the early hours.
I can't recommended the book highly enough. It is really well written, has lots of interesting characters and examines all aspects of the various kinds of relationship, whether it be best friends, parent and child, new lover, teacher and student. The various dynamics of all Riley's relationships play a part in the story in some way.
I'd only gotten about half way through this one when I decided to purchased the other books in the "Making of Riley Paige" series (3 books) and if they're even half as good as this one I will be thrilled. I can't wait to get started on them.
As a psychological story the start of ‘Watching: the Making of Riley Paige’ is how on returning to campus from a binge session in a bar, one of the girl students is murdered. Riley immediately demonstrates her differences to other students as she protects the crime scene. Furthermore she discovers she seems able to put herself in the place of the victim and the killer. She befriends Ryan Paige but initially keeps her thoughts to herself, especially as local police are suspicious of her. After a second murder on campus Riley confides in Ryan who by then is a ‘serious’ boyfriend, plus the senior psychology professor, who persuade her to talk with the FBI. The FBI agent himself exhibits similar qualities to Riley and on resolution of the serial killings he promotes her for an internship with the FBI. This sets the scene for future Riley Paige stories.
Author Blake Pierce skilfully develops and makes credible the main characters of fellow students, lecturers, police etc. and he cleverly avoids emphasis on fantasy for explanations of Riley’s abilities. Instead he uses the trauma of Riley’s childhood when her mother had been murdered in front of her, and he credits her with qualities of empathy, sympathy and compassion. Clearly Riley is highly sensitive and she is capable of assessing the feelings, urges and actions of killers from their perspectives. This unique approach lifts ‘Watching: the Making of Riley Paige’ from basic serial killer thriller to a 5-star rated multi-murder mystery.
Master of Fascination Blake Pierce has another sure-fire winner in Watching. Fans of psychological thrillers with a feisty female lead character, who becomes fully developed during the progress of the novel, should rush to buy it now!
