Product Description

New York Times and USA TODAY Bestselling author of Science Fiction, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance brings another action, adventure, and suspense-filled story to transport readers out of this world.

Ben and Aaron Cooper’s life had never been one of ease. Deserted by their mother and raised by a drunken father, they fought to survive on the Kansas farm where their father worked. Life deals them a horrendous twist when they are kidnapped by an alien trader and sold.

Ben, the oldest by sixteen months, convinces the aliens who enslave them that he and Aaron will die if they are separated. It is the only way he can think of to keep them together and protect his younger brother.

The next fifteen years prove to be the most challenging of their lives. They do what they have to in order to survive. They are convinced their time has come to an end when the freighter they are on is attacked by a species known for their lust for blood and killing.

Evetta and Hanine Marquette are Marastin Dow; a species whose leaders thrive on living in the old ways where only the strongest, most ruthless are allowed to live. The life expectancy for most Marastin Dow is short, especially on one of the warships that all Marastin Dow, male or female, are expected to serve a mandatory service. Advancement usually comes by murder.

Evetta and Hanine want a different life and work together to stay alive in the hopes of finding a life away from the constant threat of death. Life changes for them when they encounter two strange and unusual alien males.

When the males’ lives are endangered, there is only one thing these warrior women can do to save them… run!

Just not my optimal choice. Note to self: don't choose scifi romance, usually has little of the former and mostly the latter. And this book follows that formula.
Interesting characters, but they didn't really do a lot except jump each other at every opportunity.
Not really my kind of idea of action.
But, the author writes very well so I will be looking at all her series to see if there is anything with less romance and more scifi or fantasy.
Romance lovers would enjoy this. Scifi readers possibly not so much. Although it does give a tiny peek at the universe in which the two young human men find themselves.

A short introduction to more of the Marastin Dow aliens who live a very violent and often short life.
This race of aliens have had a poor showing so far in this connected series world but not all of the race are bad. The majority are trying to better their world via rebellion so they may lead a better life and hopefully will be able to do that. We have met and hear about them from time to time in both good and bad circumstances and I do hope their world improves as it seems a very unhappy place.
In this book two earth men, Ben and Aaron were kidnapped 15 years prior from earth and are used as slaves. The ship they are on is captured by a Marastin Dow ship and they are put to work on board.
Ben and Aaron meet and fall for two of the Marastin Dow women and all escape together. This ties in with Cornering Carmen in the Dragon Lords of Valdier series.

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting enough 27 June 2015

I actually came upon this book by chance while browsing the author's amazon page. It was free, but I still wasn't going to get it because I didn't particularly care about the Marastin Dow revolution. But it was free so I figured why not.

This was a pretty quick read about Ben and Aaron, brothers who taken from Earth about ten years ago when they were still just kids. Able to convince their new owners each time they were bought that they would die if separated they managed to survive thus far. And when they were won by a new captain things actually started looking up for them because they were treated a lot better and even paid. Of course that was until the Marastin Dow attacked and slaughtered the crew. But luck was on their side because the seeds of discontent within the Marastin Dow have been growing and there were enough of them that took over the ship that didn't want the boys dead. Specifically an officer named Behr who spends time with the brothers to get ideas of how different governments are run and eventually becomes their friend. Behr does all that he can to protect them in fact.

Evetta and Hanine are Marastin Dow sisters working on their mandatory military enlistment aboard that ship. After killing an attacker, Evetta flees and accidentally comes across Ben. And their attraction is instant. While those two are flirting it up, Aaron has been leaving Hanine little gifts in the form of origami creatures. Which frustrates her to no end while making her happy. By chance, those two come face to face when Evetta goes to introduce Hanine to Ben and their love also grows instantly. The two couples know that what they're doing is dangerous and soon enough the day comes when they have to flee. I couldn't remember that they were in Carmen's book until they showed up at the spacestation and then it all clicked. After much hardship and fretting, the four of them get happy futures thanks to Ha'van.

The instant attraction and instant love between both couples kind of bugged me here. It just wasn't believable. I did think that Aaron was pretty darn sweet with his origami gifts though.

The first time we meet brothers Ben and Aaron along with the sisters Evetta and Hanine who are Marastin Dow is in Cornering Carmen book 5 of the Dragon Lords of Valdier.
This was a short, sweet, spicy hot novella. Action and suspense with touches of humor along the way. A great novella giving us a glimpse of these couples journey to true love. While I have read this in the anthology Alpha's Unleashed I was so very glad to have it by itself.
Thank you Ms.Susan for another great story to add to my collection. You are AWESOME!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Warrirors and the men they love 27 January 2015

I love this story, I read it in an anthology and it was just as good. The Marastin Dow are the bad guys of the universe but there are those who want change. When Ben and Aaron Cooper are captured by alien slave traders, Ben convinces them that they have to stay together or they will die. The lie works well during their years of captivity. When a ship they are on is captured by the Marastin Dow, they are surprised to be taken captive and not killed like the rest of the crew. They are held by a science officer who keeps them alive because he knows that they come from a world where people are free.

When they meet two female technicians on the ship, sisters Evetta and Hanine Marquette, they are surprised at their instant attraction.

This is a great love story, there are elements of danger and loss but the love of the brothers for their Marastin Dow ladies is beautiful. Short, sweet and to the point - a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love From Beyond The Stars 17 April 2016

Ben and Aaron lived a very dreary life on earth before they were kidnapped. Life on other worlds wasn't easy for them (they were sold to other species as slave labor). Then the worst happened, the freighter they were on was captured by the marastin dow.
The marastin dow believe in only one thing: survival of the fittest. Not all marastin dow think this way. The ones that don't hide Ben and Aaron on the ship. Things change for the brothers when they meet Hanine and Evetta, two marastin dow females.
Hanine and Evetta as marastin dow females live under the constant threat of violence and must always be on their guard. Then they meet the brothers and something deep inside them opens up and recognises them as their soul mates.
Ben, Aaron, Hanine and Evetta must fight for their love as well as their lives as they try to escape the warship. To find a place where they can live and be accepted ( earth is out of the question, the marastin dow have purple skin and they are not related to Barney).
S.E. Smith's books has action, romance and humor and blends them all perfectly. Other authors try to do this but it doesn't quite come out the same. S.E. Smith's books show that love is not just black and white, but every color in the rainbow.

Aaron and Ben were kidnapped from their farm when they were youngsters. After being sold by various slavers, they were rescued by a rebel within the Marastin Dow. They are a species of bloodthirsty aliens with an appalling reputation within the galaxies. Whilst hiding aboard ship Aaron and Ben are cared for by the chief science officer, Behr.

Evetta & Hanine were "drafted" into the military after their parents were killed. They have both realized that as long as no-one figures out how smart they really are then they are safe. But they are terrified to be found alone on their own ship, their so-called colleagues are not known for listening to females when they say "NO".

Ben and Aaron do repair work and stay out of sight. But when Aaron sees Hanine, he beings to look out for her and leaves her origami figures, much to her consternation. When Evetta flees after killing her would be rapist, she runs into Ben. Will these literally star crossed lovers make it off the ship alive?

I loved this short story. The story was fully fleshed out and the characters were witty and you felt yourself wishing them along to their HEA!
