Too many subplots and subterfuge with so many characters it is a bit confusing. So many stage names and so many real names!Once you get to sort out who’s who it’s easier to read and follow.

Lovely story well written, filled a gap in my wish to be a "behind the scenes" person.

This was a fairly entertaining light read and a far nicer story than the other book with the same title.

An absolutely fantastic read

What a read, difficult to put down.
Follow - Vanessa on an absolutely amazing journey through her life.
It was a book that held you - so many times that I thought I knew how it would end, how wrong I was
Love, pain, confusion, fear - the 'about this book' gives a lot of detail but it certainly doesn't spoil the read. Although I didn't read it before starting to read this fantastic book.
73% in I was convinced I was right but nope far from it
I am not saying anymore as I don't do spoilers. But folk who love war books, mystery books, love books and many other genres will be absorbed as I was
I cannot recommend it more highly

Another great read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2017Verified Purchase
Superbly plotted. Complex, interweaving plot lines. Some readers may not have the patience for this: I love it. It is intelligent person’s fiction. Escapist, but satisfying. Real issues that leaves one thinking included with great story telling. Nuanced characters, And an excellent use of language. I am not particularly interested in romance. Most “romances” wouldn’t feed me at all – if I didn’t put them down I’d end up feeling that’s I’d wasted my time. What kept me reading The Wardrobe Mistress was its evocation of the past,, the excellent storytelling, plotting, use of language - all in a very readable fashion. I’d recommend this to readers who might normally tend towards more literary fiction, for those times when them want a good read that will leave them feeling enriched rather than cheated. It deserves a wide readership.

I enjoyed the book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2017Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the book, particularly because of the various different backgrounds that were used. For example: life of a rating in WW2 air force, life of aristocrat whose rich lifestyle was collapsing round him, the life of the Theatre, how The Rich survived the blitz (imagine, lunch at the Ritz for 5/-). Of course the love interest was fun - the gorgeous Commander was just perfect, but who cares. As I am nearly old enough to have lived that war time life, I found the facts were correct. I never wanted to put the book down.

Good read - shame about the proofing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 March 2020Verified Purchase
I enjoyed reading this quite well-written story from the post-WW2. Descriptions added to the enjoyment and I found the book well-woven round a theatrical storyline. There was suspense and intrigue, a bit of love and passion. Unfortunately it had been poorly proofed and having spelling errors really grated - no need for these in this technological day. Maybe the publishers were in a hurry to get the book out - whatever the reason, this spoiled it for me.

Theatre magic

A wonderful cast of truly believable characters with various plots going on as Vanessa searches for the truth surrounding her birth and identity which have been hidden from her . The Cainine character Mr Macduff is a delight ! All's well that ends well! As they say and it does all sort itself out but it takes you on an interesting post war journey in the theatrical world in London .
