Good right from the beginning

This book interested me right from the beginning. It had a good pace the whole way through. The characters were all very realistic, unfortunately I know a few like the more awful ones. I liked the setting too and enjoyed the scenes in the forest. I feel like I did figure out which child stabbed their dad early on, but it didn't spoil the story for me at all as I had no idea why. I would recommend this book.

Whilst we were told from the outset who it was who stabbed Patrick, the story took so many turns and constantly provided more and more info to Melissa, it took until the end of the book before Melissa was able to put everything together and wish she had stabbed him herself.

This was wonderful if you start reading this you won't be able to stop, I read it in one sitting it was so gripping! The characters were incredibly vivid and the sense of urgency and tension had my heart racing throughout. The twists were very well done I do have a tendency to see things coming and while I got a couple there were still a few big shocks. I feel like the police could have been a bit more defined as they were the only people who didn't seem three dimensional but everyone else is so well written I didn't mind too much. The shadow of doubt over the children didn't stop them being incredibly loveable and I routed for them the whole time. This author is really good at getting the essence of the person across so you just feel like you know them, you know the kind of things they would do or how they would react to a situation. I thought having the community Facebook posts throughout was a Really good way of giving you a sense of those people without sacrificing the time spent with the core characters. It's hard to find books this well written I'm off to read her other novels now so happy to have six other books to read by Tracey Buchanan. You won't be disappointed if you pick this up I know I'm probably not going to sleep tonight if her other novels are like this!

This is only the second time that I have only given a 1 star rating as I try to see something good in all books that I choose to read and strangely enough, this book is just like "What You Did" by Claire McGowan which had my first 1 star rating! The storylines are so similar that it makes me wonder....hmm.

Yet again the premise of the book features a happily married woman with children married to a man with the morals of a tomcat, who has a 'best friend' who really isn't and is living amongst a mostly amoral community. The husband ends up in a coma too. By the time I was way less than half way through I could see how it was all going turn out but I persevered in the vain hope that it would differ........I eventually gave up reading such uninspiring drivel which is first for me!!

I'm sure that the ending will be that mother and children live happily ever after with old love and and hubby will survive and live happily ever after too, I could be wrong but I really don't care. Half sister in limbo.

I know that the real world isn't perfect but I find it strange that a decent person can find enjoyment in such a disturbing storyline. Yet, according to the reviews some people really enjoyed it 🤔 I wonder why?

I got this book free via prime in advance of publication, I would have been gutted to have paid good money for it.

My recommendation is to avoid this and look at the myriad of good reads available of all genres on Amazon.

The perfect family?

Does a perfect family exist? Well, that's the image that the residents of Forest Grove have of the Byatt family. Yet, after a tragic event, cracks rapidly start appearing, proving that nothing is what it seems in this very close-knit community.

I really appreciated Buchanan's depiction of the setting. It is portrayed as incredibly idyllic with residents living on the edge of a forest, embracing nature and trying to reduce their environmental impact. One could use the word 'utopia' to describe this village (also used once in the novel) and it is seemingly too good to be true. However, despite this wonderful setting (which I could picture so vividly and wanted to find!), the Facebook group illustrates another aspect of the community entirely. The cattiness, the vocal opinions, the slander... oooh, it's exactly what you see in typical village community groups. The writer incorporates commentary from the Facebook group as events develop in the village; it's a rapid way of showing how many characters feel about one event and reflects their true personalities. I found these chapters that reproduced the Facebook commentary very realistic and entertaining, albeit quite saddening that this is a rather accurate portrayal of how we, as a society, behave.

It did take me a while to get into the book and I think this was because I was daunted by the vast number of characters. There are so many "busy bodies" that want to get involved in the Byatt affairs and offer their opinion. Initially I struggled to keep track of each personality and how they were connected to Melissa and her family. However, as the story developed, characters eventually became more familiar and this helped to increase my enjoyment of the story.

This was a great read because I could not fathom the final outcome. There are two narrative voices - the perpetrator of the incident and Melissa's perspective. I was convinced I had solved the mystery of what really happened to Melissa's husband, but Buchanan kept me guessing all of the way. In the end, I could not put this book down and was so intrigued to find out the real truth.

All in all, the perception of the Byatt family comes crashing down amidst many tragic stories. I found it interesting the emphasis that Melissa's in-laws placed on the 'Byatt gene pool' and could only imagine the intense pressure she felt. The idea of 'nature versus nurture' is subtly played throughout the narrative and the concept that Melissa was "rescued" from a very poor, and almost savage, upbringing. But, have her ways descended to her children?

The metaphorical 'wall of silence' creates many dead ends for Melissa. I could really feel her frustration as her children refused to open up to her and I would not know how I would respond if I were in her situation. The desperation to protect her children versus knowing the truth was a difficult inner conflict and it was interesting to see how Melissa would overcome this battle.

I really enjoyed reading this mystery thriller. There was plenty of different stories to keep me interested as I became used to the variety of characters. Appreciating the village stereotypes, I think that Buchanan has created a powerful setting with an equally powerful mystery that needs solving.
