Amazing storyline. Check Character growth. Check Twists and turns. Check Wonderfully well written. Check Yumoyori is an amazing author that puts a fresh spin on the paranormal books she writes. Every book Yumoyori has written has you losing yourself in it as soon as you start it and this book is no exception.
Kay I thought this book would be much like others of its genre and to an extent it is but my mind was completely blown at the plot twist! Well done!
I will definitely be reading the future sequels to the book as quickly as I read this one I’m sure. It’s a medium burn paranormal RH (slower burn compared to other books from Yumoyori) and for the most part you’re only introduced to one love interest.
I love how Yumoyori ties in little bits and pieces from her other books (like the unicorns 🦄) even though they aren’t in the same realm.
I like how the characters are developed as well. We get a good picture of Harper and Ian because they grow up together and what that entails when love blossoms over a 15 year time period. I like the different use of character POVs; it’s predominantly Harper but we get Ian and Carter POVs too.
And lastly I liked the storyline I would expect a faster pace with it future books only because there was a lot of character and story build up in this one.
This paranormal reverse harem romantic serial is off to a great start. The characters are strong, compelling and easily capture readers’ attentions right from the start. The chemistry sizzles and the passion is hot while the romance is quite sweet. Harper tugs at readers’ heartstrings as this first part of the romance gives readers her beginnings and how she came to be where she is at and how she came to fall in love with Ian, her first love. The story is full of emotional turmoil and has some devastating events including betrayals, secrets, and outright lies which makes it hard put for any reader to remain emotionally detached from the characters and their story.
The plot is steady paced and covers lots of ground with the story starting off when Harper is a child with a very intense and traumatic event and the suspense just keeps building from there. The author created an intriguing world with a complimentary setting for her story which adds to the story arc and there are some surprising twists included in the story to keep readers wondering. So while there are a few minor drawbacks to the story, like the cliffhanger ending, the story fascinates readers and ensures that they want to know everything especially since the revealing of secrets during the conclusion builds up the suspense for the next part.
It kind of feels like when you watch a new television series and the first episode isn't as good as it could be because it's basically an introduction.
It felt like the first 80% of this book was an introduction so it kind of dragged. The disappointing aspect for me is that even by the end of the book, you barely know any of the characters. Most of the shifters who are going to be her mates are only known as wolves right up til the end of the book, and therefore some of them don't have lines at all in the book except "woof".
Even the villains, adopted parents and parent-like police are more background than anything, so you don't have much information about their personalities, actions or motivations, just vague info about them being away a lot and there being some female shifter deaths and trouble with some witches.
I do think this book lacks a lot of character development, so there isn't much opportunity to get to know the characters, to either love them or hate them. If I had to pick 2 characters I had to choose as favourites, they might be Muffin the cat and Reika, Harper's inner wolf.
So the 2 characters the book spends the most time with are Ian and Harper. Approx a quarter of the book includes them as children growing up together. They start dating when Harper is 12, and become mates when she is 16, and then we skip forward 4 years til she's 20, they're sleeping in the same room, but apparently nobody realises they are mates, which isn't particularly believable, especially as its common knowledge around people in town who don't matter. It's also kind of shallow, mentioning that both have members of the opposite sex lusting after them, but the characters themselves aren't even really developed enough to have true chemistry or give insight to their true personalities.
Then there's the whole secrecy aspect which felt like it really dragged. It didn't make sense that the whole shifter world had to be kept secret from Harper 15 years when they all knew she was a wolf inside. Even though Ian told her he was a wolf shifter pretty quickly, she had to pretend 15 years she didn't know and it never occurred to her that the other wolves were shifters, even when they were living in the house. And then it's revealed Carter had a secrecy spell on him, but it wasn't really explained very well.
In relation the upcoming sequel, I'm not sure whether to give it a go with the hope that now the intro is out of the way and Harper will now be able to interact with her mates as people and the characters will be better fleshed out, or whether it'll be more of the same.
This is an interesting and exciting start to a new series by the talented Yumoyori Wilson. The start of the book really dragged me in and made me feel for Harper. The book was a little slow after the first couple of chapters but then it picked up again..along the way there were a number of surprises I was not expecting but others i had already guessed. In this book we get to know Ian but we only just getting to learn about the other guys..I have so many unanswered questions that I good are answered in the next book! This is an easy to read book that is full of mystery, love, passion, action and surprises and is recommended for lovers of Ms Wilson’s books!
Although this seriess doesn’t do anything new, it is still a good read. A fabulous enduring love togrthrt wit a great cast of characters. Going straight onto book two.and let’s hope book threebis soon to come along.
Loved it! The storyline was brilliant and different to other shifter books ive read. The characters were great some amazing twists as well. Would have loved to have read more on the other pack members but hopefully in the next book
This book kept me hooked from the get go. Wolf shifters who turn it to be hot alpha males, magic n witches, lies n twists that I didn't see coming. Awesome book. Looking forward to the next one. Very addictive
