I read this book because of the Cussler books he coauthored. This is Du Brul's first book and it shows. The author filled many pages by adding a few too many adjectives, by writing 93 words when 47 would have sufficed. The story starts out slow, finishes strong and is uneven throughout. A couple of pages of poorly written sex scenes did not add anything to the story and actually hurt my impression of the author. Was the garbage sex pages something the publisher said was needed? Mercer is a drunk. The multiple stories told were at times confusing and plodded along and not really satisfying. Lack of depth was the problem. That seems typical of books like this where the action, farfetched as it is,, is what sells the books. The white house meetings captain's opinions of Mercer and the CIA were filled by stereotypical characters and attitudes. Boring.
Overall this book was a slow, but decent read. It has an interesting character is Mercer. I hope Harry and his bar sticks around.
I will read the next book in the series.
