Product Description

A Tutorial: Porting VB6/MSComm32 code to Visual Basic .NET

Visual Studio .NET and its supported languages, such as VB and C# provide a modern and well supported application development environment. There are a wealth of legacy VB6 programs that can benefit from moving to VB .NET.

This tutorial is devoted to those VB6 applications that rely on serial communication to exchange data with other computers or devices. Porting VB6 based serial communication programs to VB .NET can be tricky. The tutorial guides the porting process and provides critical information and working example code to illustrate it.

The tutorial also provides help for maintaining legacy VB6 applications by employing COM Interop controls and forms developed using VB .NET to add important capability that is best done using .NET tools.

Very helpful. The 'why' explanations revealed a deeper understanding than most authors. I got lost in the multi-threading example, though.

Thank you Richard Grier!
I am a VB2010 newbie (3 weeks). I had to talk to an NCD relay board with a USB virtual serial port using VB. The NCD website had an example of writing to their relay board, but, I needed to readback the status, etc... Using the information in this tutorial I was successfully able to read the status of this relay board. I also learned many other things about reading and writing serial ports using VB.NET.
I should probably buy the hardcover book also, but, for now, I could not be any more satisfied. Thank you again Richard Grier

If you want to know about serial communications this is the book for you. The CD alone has so much material that after months I'm still finding useful tools in it.

It really helps understand the constraints that you have to live with when you use Visual Basic to develop serial communication applications. It is full of troubleshooting techniques and warns you about common pitfalls.

As a book it is one of the most usefull I have seen.
5.0 out of 5 stars Grier's Book is very helpful to VB6 programmers 6 July 2015

The book is a good start in explaining the do's and dont'ts of programming the Com Port in both VB6 and VB.Net. It explains the new properties of controls and variables revealed by dotNet by comparing them to VB6. The snippets of source code and full programs will help with migrating an application to VB.Net.
