For victories, read sacrifices. This collection of 9 short stories set in the 40k universe shows just how grim it can be ! All of the Emperors servants, be they Astartes or a lowly Imperium citizen , are compelled or forced to sacrifice themselves in order for a victory to be achieved. Not one bad story, and at least 3 stand out stories kept me interested all throughout the book. One of the stories was originally an audio book (Heart of Rage) and as I dislike audio books, had no problem seeing it included.

One of the better Space Marine short story books.

Armour and weapons that only work if drenched in innocent blood, mowing down crowds of loyal imperial civilians, silently butchering people in their homes - the work not of chaos forces or aliens but of the Imperium's noblest defenders, the space marines, revealed in this book of their 'victories'. The Black Library have apparently grown weary of the image of space marines as noble warriors giving their all for the Imperium, to serve the emperor and defend humanity, and have set about removing any moral boundary between them and their chaos counterparts. They reveal that the descendents of the most famous space marine chapter, the Ultramarines, may exist only as playthings of the traitor Alpha Legion while other loyalist chapters are simply evil wearing an aquila. This book is not about victory, it is a reworking of space marines as murderous and weak. For example -

1) The Ecclesiarchy is revealed as a vast instrument of human sacrifice. A man chosen for his innocence is ritually sacrificed - no secret, hidden rites for a select few, this ritual involves a cathedral full of priests - while a cardinal informs him this happens across the Imperium . All so a single Grey Knight bolter round is blessed. In the same story it is shown that psykers, including children, are transported en masse to be incinerated in giant furnaces, in a manner explicitly parallel to the transport and slaughter of Jews during the holocaust, to make Grey Knight armour. GW have just had a massive launch of the Grey Knights for the tabletop game. Given that their armour is made in furnaces using children as human fuel and their weapons have to be literally drenched in innocent blood to work I wonder how many people who play, or whose children play, will be comfortable with that.

2) In another story a loyalist space marine scout slits the throat of a woman as she prepares dinner so he can use her apartment for a few hours. Later his chapter brothers herd civilians together then fire indiscriminately into the crowd from their thunderhawks in order to stampede them into loyal PDF troops who the space marines subsequently destroy themselves anyway.

3) In yet another we learn that the Alpha Legion are implanting code phrases in the minds of recruits to the successor chapters of the ultramarines which go undetected and will withstand and override the rigorous mental conditioning that space marines undergo. When activated they will cause an entire chapter (a thousand marines) to turn on itself and the survivors to placidly yield up their geneseed then kill themselves - all within hours. We read how a particular chapter falls victim to this and the chapter master is shown to be weak, indecisive and even somewhat cowardly - a depiction previously forbidden by the Black Library.

4)In yet another the Deathwatch slaughter an outpost of innocent civilians to cover their tracks.

Some of these stories are quite well crafted, particularly number 2 above, but I give only 2 stars because some are not, the title is misleading and GW have soured this universe for me. The universe of 40K has always been a grim place but it has still been possible to view the space marines as harsh but noble and embodying some good in an otherwise dark setting but now even that is taken away and we see that nothing separates the actions of the astartes from those of chaos marines - they merely wear different colours.

And the revelation that many of the most important forces protecting the 'only just holding its own and keeping humanity alive' Imperium can be secretly conditioned by the Alpha Legion to destroy themselves on command - well, its an intriguing idea, but if you root for the Imperium in the games or the novels you have to wonder why you would bother now. With one book of short stories BL have revealed a depressing futility in supporting the Imperium - its noblest defenders are just as evil as their archenemy and when that archenemy snaps its fingers at some point in the future the Imperium's forces will just shoot each other.
