This is a short story in the DCI Matilda Darke series by Michael Wood, called Victim of Innocence. It’s based in Sheffield and the first book I have read by this author.
In this book, DCI Matilda Darke and her team are called to the scene of a crime where a young woman is found dead in her bed from a head wound. It seems she must have let her murderer in? There is no sign of a break in. Also, it seems that she was a rape victim but had only just reported it although it had happened five months earlier. She gave a good description of the attacker.
Only trouble is for DCI Darke, the murder victim being raped does mean that she has to liaise with with her rival DI Ben Hales as he is the SIO for the rape cases. He doesn’t want to share the information and is adamant if she wants any of it, she has to find it for herself. It does not make for a happy working relationship.
Then they get news of another attack but they still seem no further forward in finding any information on who wanted to kill their first victim or who is the rapist. The are tearing their hair out over these cases.
I enjoyed this book immensely and really glad that I have found a new series to sink my teeth into. Looking forward to reading the other titles in the series, especially as they are set around Sheffield. I like that part of the country.
