Another AMAZING story from my favorite author ever! The only complaint is that the story was too short! I would have loved it to have been longer. This is an amazing historical romance and I recommend reading EVERY boik Kathryn Le Veque has written. She is a genius at writing.

I really like the way the women in this story get to shine, showing courage that equals the knights. This is one of the many qualities of this entertaining tale. It's Kathryn Le Veque at her best, making history fascinating by blending it with steamy romance.

There is much standing between hot judge Val de Nerra and lovely lady Vesper. For one there is Vesper's homicidal brother who makes a living murdering the locals. When the story opens Vesper is on her way home to try and fix her troubled family. She meets Val while he is arresting somebody at an inn, but before their romance blossoms they are hit with her brother's crimes and Val's involvement in the Archbishop of Canterbury's assassination.

The plot is based on historical events but adds a layer of human reality that brings the medieval world to life. King Henry is a crappy dresser. Val's mother wants grandchildren. Vespers father hits on Val's mother. I find most historical novels very boring but there is no nodding off when reading Kathryn Le Veque. She is just too entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of Your Seat Ride! 19 April 2017
By Carolyn Hughes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
On top of the world, Sir Valor de Nerra has, through years of hard work, been awarded by King Henry II a position of power and prestige with tremendous responsibility as the Intinerant Justice of East Hampshire. Sir Val is fair and honorable and handles this tremendous responsibility beautifully. He is admired by his king and colleagues, as well as women for he is a striking man. As the story begins, he meets who will become the love of his life. He has the world on a silver platter.

Under the guise of a direct order from the king, he is given an impossible task in which no matter which way he turns or what he does, he is doomed. He will lose his family, his home, his prestigious position and the new love of his life. However, he is such an honorable and loyal knight, he knows he must fulfill his king's request. What happens as the result of his trying to fulfill his obligation to his king is the stuff of nightmares.

Kathryn Le Veque had me on the edge of my seat throughout this gripping story. First, she sets the scene with a lovely, slowly developing romance between our hero Sir Valor de Nerra and Lady Vesper d'Avignon. Val's mother, Lady Margaretha de Nerra is a formidable woman in her own right and appears to be the nagging mother ("when am I going to see some grandchildren"); however, that is far from the truth and the interactions between Val and his mom are a hoot. Life changing events start arising in Val's life and continue throughout until what could be the absolute end of everything, including his life. Ms. Le Veque cleverly builds the tension as decisions and events slowly build out of any sense of control. I was a nervous wreck!

It was easy to fall in love with Sir Valor de Nerra as he is such a likeable character. Lady Vesper's character and personality evolve as situations change and I really liked her courage, her loyalty and the woman she was becoming. I also loved the appearance of Sir Tevin du Reims ("While Angels Slept") who plays a significant role in Val's current situation. Also of great interest and the entire backdrop to this wonderful story is the assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket which had serious reverberations on history. It is always fascinating when an author incorporates real life events and characters into the story and Ms. Le Veque is a master at this.

This is a great book. It has all the elements I love in medieval romances. Another winner for the prolific and masterful Kathryn Le Veque.

4.0 out of 5 stars Valor, prestige, truth embodied in a near perfect knight asked to do terrible deeds could ruin his life and love. 21 April 2017

Being of Christian faith to say that I am aware a little of Saint Thomas Becket and how he died was a sad and sorrowful thing to hear or read when I was younger. Then to hear one of my most favorite medieval romance authors Ms. Kathryn Le Veque put the whole sordid tale in a romance book is unbelievable! This is a beautiful masterpiece combining both fact and fiction seamlessly. The story is told wonderfully in a composed heartrending breathtaking story of hope, betrayal, redemption, and love all rolled into one. The story comes alive and the characters even the minor ones are amazingly three dimensional plus real. I am amazed at each story that Ms. Le Veque manages to pen leaving me utterly spellbound never knowing the twists/turns she weaves with intricate mastery enthralled me and made me sad for the book to end.
Sir Valor “Val” de Nerra known as the itinerant justice of Hampshire is one of King Henry’s II most trusted knights a fair and just man who upholds the law at all times. Val always knows what is right living a near perfect idyllic life with his nagging mother but everything that Val holds dear his beliefs and the very law that makes him who he is will be questioned just from meeting Vesper D’Avignon. Val can’t help but be entranced and attracted to the beautiful lady but Vesper holds a horrible secret of her own too. When Val is tasked with a horrible deed and threatened by the King himself to carry out his orders will Val be able to do it?
As I stated before Ms. Le Veque has truly mastered the wonderful development of her characters especially her main male and female protagonist. Val at first seems like a harsh stiff brash man but he is not without a sense of humor in teasing his mother and true devotion to his past friends. I couldn’t help but like and admire him for his fortitude and tenacity in the face of true adversity. Val is aptly named Valor and he signifies everything valorous he really is a great hero to fall for! On the other hand Vesper was brave, bold and beautiful truly Val’s equal in every sense of the word. Vesper isn’t a simpering miss to back away from the fight and was willing to stand with Val no matter the cost which I totally loved. I did wonder if Val ever forgave McCloud though. I still wouldn’t mind hearing about the some of the other minor characters like Mayne, Kenan, William, and Dacian hopefully they will get a story someday. I guess in actuality I really wasn’t ready for the story to be over. I will anxiously be awaiting Ms. Le Veque’s next jaunt into history and love!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent! 18 April 2017

Vestiges of Valor took my breath away! 6 stars

I just found a little gem and wish to share it with you. As you know Kathryn Le Veque, is a talented storyteller and her novels are always filled with passion and emotions! That’s why I fell in love with Val the hero in her new book VESTIGES OF VALOR, the 1st story in the House of the Nerra series. It's a must to read, if you love medieval adventures with rich characters! Emotionally powerful!

Vestiges of Valor, is the story of Sir Valor ''Val'' de Nerra, a powerful knight, one of Henry II's most trusted knight, a man everyone adored! Suddenly, as an Itinerant Justice, dreadful decisions will mark him for ever. Val will need to redeem himself is he wants to move on with his life! A redemption which will not be easy to achieve! Val had always loved Lady Vesper, but because of these terrible events, he will do everything to gain back her trust! Will she forgive him? Is there hope for Val and Vesper? I loved the beautiful chemistry between those two passionate souls. I also liked very much Val’s mother Margaretha, she was charming , funny but also quite bold and feisty! Finally, Val will realize the true importance of family and friends.

Part of this story, is centered on the assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket. Who gave the order to kill him? Who is really the murderer?

Ms. Le Veque is a high quality writer that pulled me into her medieval story and again, I had to keep on reading to know what would happen next. I could not put it down! It was the perfect medieval romance for me! I highly recommend this sublime novel of love, loss, redemption and hope!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meek Knights need not apply... 18 April 2017

Vestiges of Valor is a wonderful story of a knight, Val, who truly lives up to his given name "Valor". He is strong, brave, wealthy, gorgeous, in essence he is everything a knight is meant to be- he is even good to his mother! His life is truly blessed. While out performing his duties as the region's top law enforcer for the king, one day he meets a woman, Lady Vesper, who is the daughter of an old acquaintance. Val is enthralled by Lady Vesper and the feeling is shared.
Val decides he wishes to court Lady Vesper and she is thrilled, but then the unexpected conflicts begin. Val is given an assignment that could greatly change his life and NOT for the better. No longer does Val's life seem charmed. Lady Vesper also has something she might want Val to know. Now Val has to find a way to get his life back into some semblance of the near perfection it has been until this assignment.
This plot was terrific! It has intrigue, deception, interesting characters, and once I started I could not tear myself away. The descriptions of settings in this authors books, as in this one, are so clear and specific I sometimes felt as if I were sitting in the great hall, just a few tables down, watching events unfold, hearing their conversations all while smelling the morning bread baking in the kitchens. I cannot wait for the next book in this group!
I highly recommend this book to historical romance readers, romance readers, and anyone who wants to get lost in another time with a happy ending as a matter of course.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an Incredible Journey! 23 April 2017
By Liliana Faura - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This book is a departure from Le Veque's medieval epic stories, but nonetheless, it is an incredible story. This story is not about battles and saving damsels in distress, but rather it shows a battle of a different kind. It refers to the personal growth of its main characters. Val, a respected and well known knight, finds himself in the middle of a betrayal against king John. He has to prove his innocence, and in the process, he loses everything he had worked so hard for. Vesper, who has led a shelter life until she met Val, shows great strength of character when she decides to support Val through his trials and tribulations. With Vesper's love and unconditional trust, Val is able to show his moral strength and valor. Vesper and Margaretha, Val's mother, are two very strong and courageous female characters who stop at nothing to protect and defend the one person they love. When Val returns from Ireland, he has a loving and trusting family waiting for him. I loved, loved, loved this book! Kathryn you keep surprising your readers with your awesome stories😘
