Product description
About the Author
The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" (Publishers Weekly). Preston and Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series and their recent novels include Fever Dream, Cold Vengeance, Two Graves, and Gideon's Corpse. In addition to his novels, Preston writes about archaeology for the New Yorker and Smithsonian magazines. Lincoln Child is a former book editor who has published five novels of his own, including the huge bestseller Deep Storm. Readers can sign up for The Pendergast File, a monthly "strangely entertaining note" from the authors, at their website, www.PrestonChild.com. The authors welcome visitors to their alarmingly active Facebook page, where they post regularly.

Pendergast back to his best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2019Verified Purchase
What I liked the most about this Pendergast story is it has less of Pendergast racing around doing the near-impossible and leaving everyone else wondering what just happened, and more of a detective story with a nasty edge. Mr Brokenhearts is going around killing and butchering women and Pendergast is assigned the case by the FBI after the murders occur in more than one state. However: this time, a Partner has been forced on him by his new superior at the FBI, who will not put up with Pendergasts unique approach to solving crimes. Agent Coldmoon grounds Pendergast and forces him to explain his rationale and stops the Agent from carrying out actions which he might once have used, like D'Agosta once did. However, Coldmoon doesn't understand Pendergast like D'Agosta does, and is left playing catch-up for most of the book, although he is not a poor investigator himself. Also, as the deaths mount up, Pendergast is let off his FBI-imposed leash to solve the case-because he always gets results. A part I found particularly well-done see's Pendergast dealing with a police officer trying to obstruct the FBI investigation, when he channels Sherlock Holmes to leave the police officer not only speechless but well and truly aware that he cannot prevent Pendergast from doing anything at all. Constance Green has returned as well, to round out the cast, and she and Pendergast's relationship is becoming...more complicated. Which may just lead to an interesting future...

Bit Disappointed but Do Buy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2019Verified Purchase
Usually I cannot put a new Pendergast book down, I am a real fan of this author and this character. However, I started this book over the Xmas period and got two thirds of the way through and then haven't gone back into my kindle to finish the book. I think I would liken this book to a good meal that lacks seasoning. I actually pre-ordered this book form my kindle on Amazon because I was so looking forward to getting it as soon as it was published, so I guess I'm a bit disappointed as it hasn't stood up to my expectations. I know that you can't stay with the old characters but they really stood out to me and were very intriguing and very real. The new Special Agent Coldmoon to me is a flat character that I don't understand or like very much. What's happened to Constance? What's happened to the Lieutenant? I guess I'm old school Pendergast. But I will still pre-order any other book in this series and enjoy the read.

Has this series run its course?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2019Verified Purchase
I put off reading this latest book to increase my anticipation, but oh what a mistake and huge disappointment it turned out to be. I cannot believe it was written by Preston and Child. The new partner had no personality to latch on to, and Pendegast was not himself at all. One aspect I did like though was the lack of ridiculous stunts and daring do action sequences that were becoming cringeable. I even missed Constance! The element of there being something mysterious and other worldly surrounding the Pendegast family was absent and we have always enjoyed that. Sadly, we have begun to realise that there are only so many books that can be relied upon in a popular series, and that finite number seems to have come here. I shall return to Relic and Cabinet of Curiosities to remind me of the brilliance of this series. Fingers crossed this was just a temporary blip.

I have read every book written by the authors about Agent Pendergast. None have failed to impress. I have to wonder how they keep coming up with fresh ideas. Pendergast books are to be savoured and read slowly, although it's quite hard to pace yourself as you always want to know what comes next. I love these books, not only for the storyline, but also for all the "snippets" that you come across. I must admit that I have learnt a lot from reading them. I cannot praise them highly enough. My only problem is that now I have to wait for the next one.

Verses for the dead. Another triumph.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2021Verified Purchase
The 18th novel in the consistently excellent series can hold its head up along side all the others. Make no mistake, it's Agent Pendergast that is the main attraction but the story is solid too.
