In 2010, an apartment in Paris is unlocked for the first time in seventy years.
This well written and researched book weaves a story of the owner of that apartment, Madame Marthe de Florian, a famous courtesan of the Belle Epoque era, as told to her granddaughter Solange just prior to the onset of WWII. It also continues with Solange's story following her departure from Paris.
I have always been fascinated by this apartment and its famous occupant, and enjoyed learning more of this amazing story.
Highly recommended for lovers of historical based on fact.

A great telling of a fascinating story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2020Verified Purchase
Ever since I heard the story of the preserved apartment found in Paris I have been fascinated. How did this apartment go unnoticed for so long? What happened to the woman who lived there? There are so many unanswered questions that of course it makes for the perfect basis of a story. I have, before reading The Velvet Hours, read two books based on the same premise and both were very well written and enjoyable but none were as engaging as the story that Alyson Richman told.
In her story we delve more into the life of the courtesan Marthe de Florain who lived in the apartment and her story is created using a mixture of fact and fiction. We see the story from the perspective of Marthe and Solange (her granddaughter) amongst the backdrop of occupied France. It truly is captivating.
If you are a fan of historical fiction that has an intriguing true story at its heard then The Velvet Hours is the book for you.

A Captivating Read

I savoured every page of this book. Alyson's writing has once again brought her characters alive, and her meticulous narrative transported me back to the late 1800's through to the start of the second world war in Paris.
I find the story based around an apartment that was only discovered 70 years later in Paris fascinating. The story is based around a Courtesan called Marthe De Florian, a bit of a rags to riches based story, she was a daughter of a very poor laundress, with the loss of her sister , she was determined to have the good things in life, she loves art, and fell in love with Charles an aristocratic man who provided her with the treasures she collected. He commissioned Boldini to pose for a portrait for him.
1939 sees Solange discovering she has a grandmother, and over 18 months or so she hears first hand her grandmothers life story. Alyson always captivates me with her beautiful writing. I can't wait for her next novel

Artistic and Colorful Literature

I enjoyed reading "The Velvet Hours" By Alyson Richman. Alyson has a way of bringing artist flair in her novels, color into the world and words of her novel. There is dark and light, and texture and composition. Her characters are intriguing and captivating. There is comparison and contrast seen in her characters. The novel deals with the best and worst of times in Paris. Two characters,Marthe de Florian, and Solange Beuagiron have their own stories, past, and present that eventually connect. Marthe de Florian has an apartment filled with beautiful art and history, that holds many secrets. Solange is a writer and has precious historical Hebrew books (inherited from her mother)that are valuable.Sometimes precious treasures can be used as means of survival and freedom. Sometimes precious treasures represent tradition and history. I loved reading this book and would highly recommend it.
