The time has come for the Catechist of Yeratet to choose a new spouse. Parteeka Ren Sussu is determined that she will be the Catechist’s wife. All that stand between her and that exalted position are the other two remaining candidates.

Now all must tell their stories. Only one will be chosen. The others will die.

This is a science fiction short story set in the far-future. It was previously published in Ideomancer, May 2004.

"A fine fantasy."
- Richard Horton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminiscent of Dune and Invisible Cities 26 April 2012
By Raymund Eich - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Though its events occur in one small room, this short story evokes wide vistas of time and space, with exotic ruined cities and a high tech military under the command of the never-seen, quasi-immortal Catechist. Samphire masterfully hints at the vast worlds that his characters inhabit. His portrayal of Parteeka, the main character, is also skillful--the reader knows from the first page that her mission to become the Catechist's spouse will not be as straightforward as she thinks. Despite that, the ending is still unexpected yet fitting. If you like Dune, Invisible Cities, dying Earths, or Lord Dunsany, give this story a try. I'll be looking for more sf by Samphire in this vein.
