I just adored this book! I loved the writing style, each of the characters, and the plot. I liked it so much that I purchased a copy of it in hardback so that I could read it again (I already gave my copy to a friend to read) and this time really savor parts of it, now that I know how good it is. It's one of those books that you stay up late at night to read.
It's an unusual book too. The main character is a 22 year old ordinary Catholic woman, except that she is extraordinarily contemplative (she loves to pray for hours at a time, to go to mass, to read books about the saints). How many novels do you read from the point of view of a contemplative woman? I adored this, especially since it was written by a man--and he absolutely pulled it off. Her rich inner life is juxtaposed with her strikingly mundane life on the exterior--even this I liked though, because of the author's descriptions which made the "mundane" come to life.
The story is a bit of a mystery-thriller, but not in an action sense--more in a contemplative sense. It's very hard to put into words, as you can tell. I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, not able to put it down. All types of Catholics (orthodox and more liberal) will really like this novel the most, but really anyone would like it, except people looking for one of those novels that seem to be so popular today--full of action like car chases and violence, dozens of characters you can't keep straight with none of them developed enough to make the reader care, a saccharin romance as the plot or even worse empty sex with explicit descriptions as the plot. This novel is the opposite of the latter one: beautiful descriptions that make people and places come alive, lots of spiritual and interior action and growth, an exciting plot that keeps you guessing, and characters you hate to leave behind.
I have already purchased another of this author's books as my next read!
