And if he fails, his only fallback is an incomplete plan to move enough personnel to safe havens and prepare to restart civilization.

What's more, there are others who have similar plans - and believe it or not, they're even less charitable than a Wall Street investment banker. Sooner or later, Smith will have to deal with them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be checking out the authors other books looking for more of the same. Although I preferred the original characters, this spinoff is definitely one that I'll be continuing.

Zombie Apocalypse meets a bit of old school Tom Clancy (Successfully!)

I love the Black Tide series, but I thought it had reached a natural end and this book relaunches the series by going back and picking some characters who we briefly meet in the first book and telling their story as society collapses around them. I thought, on the whole, the characters were reasonably written if a bit 2 dimensional but y'know, not that much of a problem. Action sequences were great and I thought real tension in the last 50-70 odd pages. It is about then that there is a truly horrific scene that does not spare the sensibilities and jarred this enjoyer of dystopian fiction. And from then on you can't tell how it's going to play out.

This book could be an entry to the Black Tide world but it would be better if you read at least the first two as well as the collection of short stories 'Black Tide Rising' (particularly 'Battle of the BERTs') then you can appreciate fully the author's continuity. He has created an excellent world for the characters to inhabit and I found it very easy to embrace.

What makes the the first couple of Black Tide books soooo good and this one so superb is the authors research and use of that detailed knowledge to create a credible techno-thriller feel to the zombie apocalypse.

I hope there are more books in the series as at the very least they maintain my interest and when they're good they are VERY good. Possibly the best in the genre that I've read.

An unknown organisation has created and released a synthetic bio weapon that turns it's victims in to zombies. Civilisation begins a slow and inevitable fall in to darkness. Several groups have a plan to prevent this from happening. The problem is that the solution involves harvesting victims for vaccine. Set in New York different factions team up to accomplish this. Criminal gangs, banksters, police and freelancers all ignore law and morality because survival trumps programming. Inevitably the power plays begin as things fall apart. I found this book realistic. Some stay at their posts to the last and some jump ship. Others see a crisis and plan to take advantage. Others just can't or won't except what is happening. A good series.

But where did he eventually end up?
And who was behind the virus to start off with?
A good read, but you have to start off from the first book.

This is a new entry in the Black Tide Rising series, dealing with Tom Smith, brother to Steve, brother in law to Stacey, and uncle to Faith and Sofia. He's the head of Security for the Bank of the Americas. As such, he's made plans for the zombie apocalypse, but the bank is reluctant to activate his plans. This means weeks and months are spent exploring what happens in Manhattan as humanity slowly falls victim to the zombie virus.

While Faith, Steve, Sofia and Stacy all make cameos, this is Tom's story, along with some of his security staff. Some of the story was covered in the short story "Battle of the BERTs" by Mike Massa in the Black Tide anthology, which is how this book now exists.

I look forward to reading the next one in the series.

All told this is a good read but is it worth the full price no my advice is to pick it up second hand.
To get the most out of this book, you will have needed to have read the other Black tide books.
This book mostly fill in some missing scenes and some of the back story from the first Black tide rising book and then go on to acts as a set up book for future books. Now if this book was edit and then combined with first black tide rising book it would be a better book all round as see/ read the full story.
Now a fun little gem is the crossover references to the Paladin of the shadow book AKA "The Kildar" it look like The dùn has touch the sky.
