Tormented by their desires, Rurik and Brienne resist giving into their yearnings and endangering their people.

But destiny will not be denied. Their love will burn brightly through all the ages to come as Norse and Frank meld into a new people — the Normans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Research=A+; Plot=C; Romance=B 3 August 2015

Kirkwood definitely did her research. Describing the heroine as a "peace weaver" shows the depth of her knowledge. While the book was well written, certain things did bother me. The constant miscommunication, or complete lack of communication, between the couple was frustrating. It felt like the book kept dragging instead of getting to the point; there would be another side issue that at first damaged and then, when straightened out, strengthened their marriage. One or two of these would have been fine to show their growing trust, but it was the whole book. The heroine's words toward the end were irritating. I understand that she was scared and confused, but it still ruined her for me. Overall, it is a sweet tale that really does its best to be historically accurate (for a romance novel).

When the Norseman claimed the lands to the south that they had conquered, they took wife's from the women in those lands. Rurik was a 1st born son of one of the Norsemen. Brienne was the oldest daughter of a Baron who held some of those lands originally until he was attacked and killed. Brienne was placed in a convent years earlier, in hopes that God would grant good fortune to her father with her placement in the Abby. She was content in the Abby, but had not taken her vows to the become a bride of Christ. The King decreed that she was to marry one of the conquering Baron's. The story begins with the arrival of the Knights at the Abby with instructions to take her to the man the king has decreed will be her husband.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good read! 17 March 2017

Overall it was a good book, and I didn't want to put it down. At times I got confused....Rurik wasn't interested in other women after his love interest died, but then he believes Katla when she says the baby is his. Maybe I missed something?? Then there's the stupidity of the heroine. When you Lord and master says "Don't go into the woods", DON'T go into the woods. Having said this, it is a good read, I and would highly recommend it.
5.0 out of 5 stars hearts & loves worth fighting for 29 February 2016

well written historical novel. quite long for an e-book. well researched. characters you either like well or totally dislike, few in betweens. some characters make you laugh, cry & rail at their frustrating stupidity at times. others you enjoy seeing them get their comeuppances - bloody tho that may be. some reviewers have been intolerant of the two lead's lack of trust in each other - but then you have to remember their history, all they grew up with. especially for Brienne. her history with the norsemen/northmen was not a very good one & did not forebear to be one in the future. tho this is a love story & they do fall in love - love was not to be trusted back then. Rurik had his own history with women, faithless lot they may be. seeds of love and doubt were constantly being planted and well tended in both our lovers by many around them, & as we know it is so easy to believe the wrong than to have faith. in our current days of lack of Christian faith, we forget how hard it was back then for those of true faith to fight for our Lord & to convert those of the 'old' ways to Christ. for those new to the faith, it was doubly hard to believe & to change. much of daily life was centered on their faith & the church. it is sad that so little of our lives are centered on the church now.

I just couldn't read anymore..the language is so stilted, the characters so cliche and stuffy I just couldn't turn another page. I also couldn't keep up with the basic plot and I was less than 100 pages in. People may have once talked like this (though I doubt it) but it's so cumbersome to read I have no desire to continue with the story.
