5.0 out of 5 stars carole 18 November 2014

Well now. The first book was like an appetizer. The second book the main meal. Good plot and character development. Easy reading. The story hung together and enjoyed the style. Now a waiting the tired book and hope it will be the icing in the cake.
4.0 out of 5 stars Slow-developing sequel 6 October 2013

This is a fairly slow-developing but interesting book about a former guard turned mercenary finding that he has the ability to learn magic -- information found in the initial book. This book takes him to where he'll receive his education -- that a girl that he finds attractive is based where he'll receive his education is as much a draw as learning magic.
This girl and several others are captured by "the bad guys", a school with an alternative philosophy of the use of magic, one that is not supported by the kingdom in which it is located.
This forced the mercenary turned magician to form his own small team, and travel to release his intended girlfriend.
Readable, but fairly slow-paced, with few "action sequences" and minimal plot twists...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great 29 September 2013

I read this book, and it was interesting at first, but after a short while it was mostly "when does this ends already", because there wasn't any spark in the book to really captivate my attention.
4.0 out of 5 stars book 2 doesn't disappoint 28 August 2013

Jaelan has come back to the school of sorcery to learn more. A magic portal key is stolen from the archives and sword sorceress, Sulana's team is sent out to retrieve it. Sulana feels Jaelan is not yet ready to go along and should stay home and continue to learn. Unfortunately, the team is ambushed and captured by a larger force from a rival sorcery school. Jaelan learns quickly and when he hears of Sulana's capture sets out with an unauthorized team to free her. How he does this is another good sword and sorcery tale. Look for Book 3.

2.0 out of 5 stars A pretty ordinary fantasy 4 August 2013

I wish I could give a better rating to this book, but unfortunately much like the first book in the series I found the story pretty predictable, the characters one note and the dialogue both wooden and unlikely. The author has some good ideas about magic and has obviously given how it works some real thought. Its a pity the same hasn't been done for the characters who always seem to blurt out exactly what they are thinking at every given opportunity, seem terribly naive as to political issues and live in a magic community that seems to have not more than 10-20 people in a large castle. I can already take a good guess how this series will end and I'd winch if I read it only to find no surprises but despite all these problems I did manage to make it though both books so they have something going for them but they aren't novels I'd read twice.
