Product description

VHS Nasty is part 3 in the infamous cult VHS doc series VHS Lives. In the early 80's, VCR players were in every house, but a legendary cult following developed during the VHS era like no other, those that loved The Video Nasty! Yes kids, with video stores on every corner during the VHS boom, they were flooded with an array of exploitation and horror the likes of which we will never see again. The art on the VHS sleeves was awesome and these unregulated horror, gore and sexploitation films rocked before they were banned in the UK and the hysteria started to spread across the globe! VHS Nasty delves deep into the cult classic satanic panic that is the video nasties, taking an indepth look at censorship within horror films specifically the video nasty scandal that shook not only Britain in the early 80's, but shook the world into a frenzy of panic! Talking about cult video nasties such as Faces of Death, Cannibal Holocaust, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Driller Killer and many more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be better.

If you purchased this documentary hoping to learn about the UK's Video Nasty movies you will be disappointed.

There were seventy two titles classed as 'Video Nasties' (downgraded to 39 eventually), this movie only covers 25 of them. and focuses a lot more time to other titles.

Unfortunately there are other errors in this production and I cannot recommend it as an introduction to this unique set of films.

Pro's:

The American talking heads views on the movies, and their experiences of finding and watching for the first time. The vhs tracking used throughout is a nice touch.

Con's

Only 25 of video nasties are covered and several titles are incorrectly labeled as such, Xtro and Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Suspiria too.

In conclusion:

VHS Nasty is a film about individuals experiences of watching horror movies and some Video Nasties and their thoughts on censorship. If it was called 'VHS horror' I would give this a higher rating. Using the 'Video Nasty' term is misleading.

Other films about the same subject are available and cover each of the 72 movies in detail.
