Ms. Dark approached Jenn and asked her if we’d like to review her newest book, Unlawful Desire. Jenn forwarded the synopsis to me to see if I’d be interested in reading/reviewing it and I decided it sounded intriguing and told her I’d be happy to read it. I’m glad I did. Its release date is just around the corner too; so as of December 15, you too can experience this dynamic couple!
I know, I know, if you’ve read the synopsis, you might be worried. I hesitated for a moment as well – the ravishment scenes; that could mean anything really. I’m here to tell you, it’s fine. If you’ve read any steamy romance novels, you’ll be fine. It is extremely clear with every scene that everything is completely consensual, and desired. So if this part of the synopsis gives you pause, let it go.
Ms. Dark is a fairly new author and when you read a new author’s work, it can go one of two ways – really, really good, or pretty much, not so good. I’m happy to say that this was the former, it was very entertaining! I enjoyed the characters and found myself rooting for them. I wanted them to find their HEA. After all, if you’re familiar with my reviews, you already know a second-chance romance is one of my favorite themes. There’s something about losing your first (usually) true love, and years (usually) later, the fates pull you back together and give you a second chance to build and nurture a love that got away - once upon a time. It’s a pretty romantic theme and I’m a sucker for a good second-chance romance. And the fact that these two had been a Dom and his Sub in their past made it very intriguing.
There were a few things that I would have liked to see. First and foremost, the safe-sex conversation never happened and this just felt like something that should have occurred despite the fact that these two were already well-acquainted; after all, it had been years. Also, the answers might be in future books within this series, but we were left hanging about a few things…What really happened between her and her sister? Do they ever make up or are they destined to be adversaries now and in the future? Did her dad get sick due to natural or non-natural causes (this will make sense to you after you read it)? What’s with her sister’s fiancé anyway? Hmm, hopefully these questions will be answered in future book(s).
In any case, Rock is a bad-boy Dom with a tender heart, especially for his first and only love, Annabella. He left town six years prior for reasons that were his own, but let’s just say he had Annabella’s best interest at heart. When he returns, he’s gone from bad-boy Dom to bad-boy, all-grown-up lawyer (and yet still a Dom) who still dresses in leather and low-slung jeans and rides a bike. When he rides back into town a successful man, word of his return gets around quickly and when Annabella learns he’s back, she cannot resist going to see him the first chance she gets.
Annabella has switched, literally. She’s gone from Sub to Mistress and is well respected within the town’s BDSM community. After Rock left town, things changed for her and she just didn’t feel like she felt comfortable submitting to anyone else; she feels she likes to be the one in control of the scenes nowadays. When Annabella shows up at the doorstep of Rock’s hotel room, he’s both delighted and hopeful they can find something they both lost and he’s never gotten over…
…”You going to let an old girlfriend in, or do I have to stand out here all day?” Rock shook himself. He’s been standing there staring at her like a dolt for almost a full minute. “Of course. Get in here.” She embraced him, pressing her wondrous body against his. Generous ******* crushed against his chest. “How are you, Rock?” “Day’s looking up.” He squeezed her close, grinning over her shoulder. Everything in him blazed to life. He resisted the urge to run his hands over her ample hips, that curvy ass he knew too well. Her scent, vanilla cream and some kind of floral shampoo, filled his nostrils. He forced himself not to inhale, or he’d never let her go. “Damn, you’re still gorgeous as ****.”….
One thing about these two I truly appreciated is they didn’t play ridiculous games and create a bunch of drama with each other. She has never gotten over him, he has never gotten over her. They didn’t sling mud about why he left or how hurt she was at the time. He tried to explain why he had left and she very genuinely explains to him that she understands why he needed to leave and was mature enough to realize it wasn’t something he had done “to” her but instead, something he had to do to create a life for himself. She greeted him with warmth and friendship and made it clear she wasn’t going to ask him to jump through hoops. So refreshing!
Annabella’s father runs one of two powerful companies in their town. He’s been ill for a while and is grooming Annabella to step into his shoes and take over the top position within the company. Despite some grumblings from their investors, he knows his daughter is qualified and will lead his company into the direction he foresees for its future. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the boardroom (and unbeknownst to her dad, the bedroom as well as she’s a well-respected Domme).
But there’s a bad guy in town (isn’t there always?) and he’s a sleazy real-estate developer who will stop at nothing to take over their town - the same way he’s taken over others; by hook or by crook, it doesn’t seem to matter either way to him. He sets his sights on Annabella’s family company and causes all sort of problems.
One of the other things I liked about this couple was that they trusted each other completely. She asked for his help in keeping her company safe and he didn’t hesitate to agree. He asked her to give him a chance to have her back – and although she’s switched to Domme, part of her craved his touch and craved being “his” again and because she trusts him explicitly, she agrees to try…
…”This isn’t a good idea.” He pulled back a little, eyes searching her face. “Don’t you want to be with me?” “God, if only you knew how much. But this can’t happen. You’re a Dom.” “What happened to you?”…”…I miss subbing. But I just can’t bring myself to do it.” Rock took her hand and pressed it to his warm chest. His heart hammered beneath her palm. “You could if you learned to trust again.” The implications in his words sank in and a touch of nervousness tightened her belly. Nervousness and hope…He rubbed her arms, his face close to hers. ”Will you let me help you?” She drew a deep breath. “I promise, we’ll take things slow. Let me show you everything can be all right again.” Oh, God. The tenderness in his eyes pinched her heart. She nodded. Rock crushed her to him and his mouth claimed hers. Ella [her nickname] melted into a puddle…
Even though these two had been apart, there was clearly respect and a deep friendship along with the love they both secretly still feel for the other. Watching them take these raw elements and forging them into something both new and old, familiar and fresh was lovely to read. They had a lot to overcome, both between the bad-guy in their midst along with each of their feelings toward each other and the relationship they had lost.
I was pleasantly surprised a new author could create a story such as this. It was interesting, it was sexy. It had intrigue and conflict, but it also had a deep, heart-felt love that had never died. I will definitely want to read more from her in the future. I think if she continues to write at this caliber (and it seems like they almost always continue to grow and improve with time), she has a bright future as an author in this genre! I’d like to thank Ms. Dark for providing me with an ARC copy of this book for a non-biased review. I enjoyed it very much!
