Content and structure of this book

In this book, the third book in the series, you will become comfortable with programming in C# by creating a simple survival game in Unity.
The book includes:

The content of each chapter is as follows:

  • Chapter 1 provides an introduction to C# and explains key programming concepts such as variables, variable types, polymorphism, constructors, or methods as well as best practices for C# programming within Unity.

  • Chapter 2 helps you to code your first script in C#. It explains common coding mistakes and errors in Unity, and how to avoid them easily.

  • Chapter 3 gets you to use C# to instantiate, use and control Rigidbody objects from your script as well as explosions.

  • Chapter 4 explains how to create a simple weapon management system. You will create weapons (e.g., a gun and a grenade launcher), manage the collection of ammunition, and also implement a user interface to keep track of ammunition.

  • Chapter 5 explains how to use Mecanim and NavMesh navigation to control an animated NPC that detects, follows, or shoot at the player.

  • Chapter 6 makes it possible to combine the skills that you have acquired in the previous chapters to create a fully functional level. You will also learn how to generate a maze (or game level) dynamically from your code.

  • Chapter 7 provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) related to FSM, NavMesh, Rigiddbody components, or Artificial Intelligence. It also provides links to additional exclusive video tutorials that can help you with some of your questions.

I started learning Unity a couple of month ago using online resources from Unity as well as various classes from Udemy but could not really retain what I learned by following along a video. Most of the time I could replicate what I saw as long as I followed the videos step by step but often could not remember why I performed certain actions or develop a deeper understanding of what was happening. This book really helped me gain a deeper understanding, and was concise enough to keep me interested. As of now I'm about 66% through the book, and will likely finish it in the next couple of days. Thus far I have only experienced a small oddity in the code in that the NPC using Nav Mesh Agent keeps raising up as it follows me but other than that it has been smooth sailing. In the past I have been programming in C# for 10+ years but haven't done anything 3D since my Masters so this was quite helpful.

The third book (out of four) i bought, the Unity 5 From Zero to Proficiency series is a perfect series to make you understand how Unity works.
The third book focus on more advanced C# methods and functions to perform complicated task for your game such as AI, Weapons managements and more 3D game functions.
Great examples for codes, the book shows a code to add, and explains step by step its functionality and what every C# function does.

I thought this book was very good if you are a beginner to game programming. We started doing the first couple books in a class at school and I did not want to stop and have continued to use these books. With books like this one I have been able to do things I never knew I could do in terms of game creation. This is a great series for people who want to make their own games.
