Product Description

The Betram ritual, when the full moon occurs on the summer solstice, is a sexual rite—and a requirement—for all unbonded Stiyaha of age. The irresistible urge to mate drives their inner beasts. Some succumb and transform, while others hide behind masks. None can escape the compelling need.

For Leonna, Betram offers one night of freedom from a destiny she doesn’t want. Eager to participate, she’s drawn to a formidable male whose tenderness burrows into her soul. Despite discovering she’s below his status, she is caught up in their passionate frenzy, and loses her heart to a male she can never have.

Though reluctant, as an unbonded male, Prince Nicholai must participate in the Betram ritual. Because he fears harming anyone he gets close to, he dons his mask and vows to stay in human form. What he doesn’t expect is the intensity of his hunger for a certain honeyed female hidden behind a disguise. As much as he longs to forget her, he can’t, for she’s unforgettable.

Note: intended for mature audiences.

Leona comes from a merchant family that's struggling due to her father's health. Knowing she has responsibilities to shoulder, and she knows that her dream of being a painter is not in her future. She is looking forward to Betram, and the freedom it offers from her life for one night.

Nicholai is a warrior, and the Prince of his people, the Stiyaha. He's not looking forward to Betram, but he is going to do his duty and go as all unbounded males are required to do.

Neither are looking to form anything permanent, and they're not interested in being bonded. But, they may just find what they need, even if it wasn't what they were looking for...

This story is a burst of excitement right from the start. Wild unbridled passionate rituals, a sexy prince, and a battle kick start this sexy story. It doesn't slow down the entire story, what a fun ride! Unwanted arranged marriages, traitorous family the list goes on! Leona is sweet and caught up in what she thinks she must do, but she longs for so much more. Nicholai is caught up in duty and fear. But as any good romance they bring out the best in each other. This is a fantastic HEA.

My Score: 4 Stars ☆☆☆☆

Well this is the first time that I've read some of Rosalie Redd writing. When you first read something it tells you the story of things like where you're at what's going on it fills you in on everything, well the beginning of this book I was confused. But as I kept reading everything fell into place. Betram Ritual was a Lemurian festival that the Stiyaha celebrated the one night to run free as there Beasts and do whatever they wanted if they wanted to rut and bond they did or they could just rut without any attachments. See the only time they were in their beast form is when they did battle with the Gossum their enemy.
Prince Nicholai wanted to run and should a female attracted him then he'd rut But no bonding never.
Leonna aka Lea was finally free she didn't care if she was rutting she just wanted to run free and the chase was on. Hours went by and he still didn't catch her or did he? I was gifted this ARC for an honest and truthful review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be an interesting world, but needs some work 20 June 2016

Leonna is a girl from the merchant class in Lemuria which is somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. She takes part in the Betram festival in which all the unbonded Lemurians let their beasts run free and rut uncontrollably. Of course, she runs into Prince Nicholai though she hides her identity from him.
Both Leonna and Nicholai have issues with their families, yet they still seek each other out though Nicholai isn't sure who Leonna really is. Fortunately, she's also an artist and he unknowingly commissions her to paint his portrait.
I found this short novella fairly confusing. It takes place in the Pacific Northwest about six hundred years ago, though they seem to pass through portals and come from another planet. There are other beasts that the Lemurians fight against to protect humans? who don't appear in the story. There are a lot of side plots to do with Nicholai's brother and Leonna's betrothal, none of which made much sense and are resolved fairly easily and predictably. There were also some anachronisms in speech that were irritating if this story took place so long ago. The story has potential, but relies heavily on sex as the main impetus without much else to show why the two main characters are involved with each other. It might be interesting to see if a full length book could resolve some of these issues.
5.0 out of 5 stars Destiny! 9 January 2017

Six hundred years in the past, Leonna was ready to participate in the Betram ritual that evening and felt a thrill of excitement. The ritual occurred every 30 years and required all unmated Lemurians to participate, letting their beasts run wild and their passions run free with the dual pull of the sun and moon. During this time, it was pure release; there was no obligation to mate. Leonna’s mother told her that by the luck held within her necklace, she could find what her soul craved that night – and for her, that was her painting ability. But an accident had disfigured her and left only one finger on her right hand.

Prince Nicholai dreaded the Betram ritual. He was afraid he could inadvertently be bonded to someone by his beast. Therefore, choosing to remain in his human form, he had the obligatory mask he was to wear. But in the woods, he caught a scent of sweet honey and was driven to pursue the female’s scent. When he caught her, she savored their time together because all they had was tonight. She had seen the markings on his body that indicated he was the Prince! He asked her name, since she wore a mask too; and she realized she could not let him know that she was a common merchant’s daughter. She swiftly rose to her feet, gathered her clothes, and ran away. But he couldn’t stop thinking about her. Will he look for her? Will he be able to find her when he has no idea who she could be?

There are so many more things going on in this story. It’s a wonderful tale and keeps the reader curious how it will all come together. There is intrigue among the royal family. And there is danger ahead. Don’t miss this remarkable book! I highly recommend it!
5.0 out of 5 stars What a delightful love story! 19 June 2016

The author has created a fabulous world with characters that would not let me put the book down, so now I am in danger of starving to death. But what a way to go!

Leonna meets Nicholas during the Betram ritual in which all none betrothed adults must attend. While the populace remains in human form most of the time, on Betram the beast within this race of humans will take over and find a mate for the night.

Neither Leonna nor Nicholas had looked forward to this ritual and both planned to remain in human form. That is until they scented each other.

Neither can deny the love that consumes them. But there are several problems for any future between them:
1) They wore disguises, so they no clue how to find each other.
2) Nicholas is the king's first son.
3) Leonna is from the merchant class.
4) And there is an evil second brother who wants to be king.

You won’t be able to put this book down until all those matters are resolved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read. 15 June 2016

This is a shorter prequel. It places the characters, develops them quickly, and moves them through some seemingly insurmountable complications before the resolution. There are some minor editing errors, but the author is a good writer and her prose flows nicely. The reader who is unhappy with explicit sexual description will probably not get through the first section. It jumps into a seemingly casual encounter that quickly becomes the primary motivating force for both main characters. Overall, a fun, though not too long, read.

This is a fairly new author so this is the first book I have read by her, but I know I will be following her to see how she does. This book was very good ! It is about The Betram ritual, when the full moon occurs on the summer solstice, all single men and women of a certain age must participate, it is a sexual ritual. Prince Nicholai must participate and because he does not want anyone to know who he is he goes as a human. Leonna ( Lea) because of an accident when she was a child also goes as a human, she is the daughter of a honey cart owner. Both of them are masked but the attraction is instant . Could a royal love a commoner? Could they be together? I was gifted a copy for an honest review
