Julia and Ben are newly married when a woman from Ben's not so recent past shows up w/ a little reminder of their time together. She felt she had no other choice than to turn the child over to Ben. However, young Julia had other plans, hopes, and dreams for her future as Mrs. Carreras. Julia soon makes it apparent that it will take quite a bit for her to warm up to Ben and his little surprise. She tries to hold herself back as well as she is scared of something being taken away from her just when she grows attached to it. This doesn't last long, but soon the shoe is on the other foot, Ben's, and he can't trust all that Julia says and he begins to question her motives.
I started out not liking Julia because of the way she reacted to the news that arrived shortly after they exchanged their wedding vows. Yet, I cut her some slack because she truly was young and sheltered and there was a huge wrench tossed into her HEA. Julia soon means to make the best of the situation and grows up into her new role. Ben of course can't believe/trust her now even though it was what he had wanted and he had, after all allowed her a WEEK to come to terms w/ things. Okay he did give her the opportunity to walk when the OW dropped her bombshell so he had every right to expect a different reaction from Julia than he got, but at the same time he shouldn't have thought it would be a complete turn-around so quickly. Yet Julia still came through in the end, but then Ben soon annoyed me w/ his pushing away - perhaps another defense mechanism on his behalf? He test Julia and she comes through w/ flying colors but then when the situation presents itself and Julia is looking out for another's best interest (the little surprise) Ben is quick to accuse! All he did was eavesdrop on a conversation and then jump to conclusions. Then he forces Julia to give into him on something else! Thought Julia opens up to Ben about what she is afraid of Ben doesn't reciprocate. However, he does have those thoughts and for some reason that helps his case a lot. He knows what he did is wrong and he breaks down to Julia even though he doesn't give voice to those things it is enough. Then his final act goes a way to redeem him and looks as though he realizes that he needs to learn to give as well!
So in the end while both h/H irked me at different points I was glad to see them get their HEA and I liked the changes and realizations that came to both of them given the trial they were forced through. I may not have always agreed w/ them, but I think their reasoning was understood in the end and seemed to stem from aspects of their childhood as well.
