"I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book" I try not to give a storyline away when I review a book. There is a perfectly good blurb to interest you in this book. Until this series (this being the 4th book), which starts with Alex's surprise, I admit that I have never taken interest in the M/Preg genre. I was drawn to the first book and couldn't help but get stuck into the next 2. In the third book we meet Ash and his rescuer D. Ash has been so severely abused in any way you can imagine by his abusive, forced Mate, husband. D is a larger than life character that despite his size, which is considerable, has a heart of gold and will and does anything to help Ash recover from the mental anguish caused by his previous life. He is a perfect example of "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" Once again you will need the box of tissues close by. The fact that the characters in this series, the stories each of them have been given, and the way they have all been blended into each others' stories tells you that this is a good series (one which I would like to see continued) written by a clever author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, Sexy, and Utterly Compelling Read!!! 25 May 2017

Nobody does gay m-preg like Chris McHart! This latest book in this series is both heartbreaking and heartwarming; such a touching and impassioned romance. The plot was engaging, the writing impressive, the imagery vivid, and the characters complex and well thought out. These characters quite simply draw you right into the story and make you believe in this extraordinary world the author has created for us. You just can't help but become invested in their lives, and rooting for them becomes second nature. One physically and emotionally damaged yet beautiful man meets another man who will do anything it takes to save him and show him the healing power of true love. Their journey to love is truly a joy to read. I was hooked from very early on and remained riveted to the very last word. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet, sexy, and utterly compelling read.

*I was given an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review. All opinions are my own.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow - Great Book A Must Read!!! 26 May 2017

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

Wow! I really enjoyed this book which is a continuation of the Unexpected series. Alex's Surprise, Saving Alex, and Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me are the first 3 books in this interesting and enjoyable series. You'll meet several of the characters from the first 3 books here. The main characters tracker D and the seriously abused mate Ash. I read this book practically straight through because I didn't want to stop though exhaustion made me put the book down until the next day.

Tracker D went back to save Ash during the prior rescue of Alex from Edler Adali's residence. D felt some unknown draw to Ash which is why he defied orders and with a clear and present danger went back to get Ash out along with Alex. D hopes and pushes Ash to seek out help for his many issues. D in the meantime has to hold back his intense feelings and desire for Ash until he might possibly one day return his feelings. While slowly exploring the world for the first time Ash slowly emerges from his shell and possibly realizes his love for D. With D and Ash's love buds strange things start happening to Ash. An unexpected pregnancy surprises both D and Ash. Ash it is determined to be part of a thought to be paranormal species called Mages. This is another aspect of Ash and D's life to adapt to and work through.

Read the story to find out what's going on with Ash and where it will Ash and D. Ash has to over come the severe torture and abuse he suffered by his mate Elder Adali. Will things change with the revelations from D and Ash? How do they affect not only their lives but has far reaching implications for not only D and Ash but their group or circle of vampires and shifters. The book is rich with detail and character development. I would love to see more about what's happening to Ash's since that was the only thing not fully covered. I'm looking forward to further books in this series as there's plenty of enjoyable characters that could I think support other stories. Get your copy and see what I mean.
4.0 out of 5 stars Wondrful story 26 May 2017

This story about Ash and D was a nice mpreg paranormal/magic novel about a rescued, subjugated and now windowed mate of a vampire Master and the enforcer whom saved him. Other than mention of vampires, the monarchy and rarity of wizards, I wasn’t sure what other supernatural there were nor what powers the monarchy or D had. Were members of the monarchy vampires too? How did D and his team survive protecting their assignments from harm?

The novels takes us through Ash’s freedom and growth as a freed man whom has spent his life up to this point as a virtual prisoner to his parents prior to their voluntary sale of their son to his mistreating vampire mate. This was an accepted custom in our novel’s world and D and his friends work to change the laws around treatment of such mates. We are taken through Ash’s overcoming his conditioned training to become a strong man of his own rights and how D stays a true gentleman. The evolution of their relationship is well-conveyed and keeps a reader’s attention. Their actual sexual relationship – whether Ash or D is the pregnant one – is an interesting play on the strong dominant protector versus the previously submissive mate who proves to become a wizard at the point when D verbally declares his love to Ash. I think it would have been interesting if Ash started experiencing wizardry powers the moment D realizes his attraction and unwavering dedication to Ash and his well-being. It seems a bit cliché that Ash comes into his powers at the same time D verbally states his love. Does this mean that upon verbally declaring love, wizards come into their power? Or was it that wizards come into their power when they realize they are loved romantically?

Despite new questions that I am now curious about, this novel was well-paced and definitely worth reading. It makes you wonder if there was a book prior to this or if there will be a continuation which will provide additional answers.

To end, there were some editing/grammatical issues which threw me off whilst reading and decreased my understanding which I emailed to the author.

An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful continuation of a great series 28 May 2017

Unexpected Powers is book four in the unexpected series. The timeline of the book runs parallel to Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me (Book three) and the both coincide with the end of Saving Alex. If you find everything I just said confusing, you are not among those of us who have followed the series. Join us and catch up. This series is best enjoyed by reading the books in order.

This installation explores the life of Ash. He was the forced mate of the man who kidnapped Alex in the prior books. When Alex is rescued he sends his liberator to rescue Ash. Ash is now supposed to be a free man, but he has once again become imprisoned. This time in a cell of his own making.

When D, freed Alex, he was satisfied with his life and not seeking anything else. Fate had other plans, however. D, rescues Ash as Alex insisted, but one look at Ash and D is head over heels in love. The problem is Ash has locked himself away in a prison made of his distrust and emotional trauma. As D sets about working his way through the layers surrounding Ash’s heart, and Ash begins to trust and love again something new and strange begins to occur.

I enjoyed this book. As I have learned with Chris McHart, you just must expect the unexpected. His approach to the details is refreshing. We have all read mpreg, cross species mating and forced mating books, but, not like this. Male pregnancy is illegal, there is a very different hierarchy in the supernatural world. There is tenuous interaction between humans and supernatural beings. The list goes on and on and keeps growing with each book. The series books intertwine in such a way as to not just continue the story but continually develop it in refreshing ways rarely seen.

At this point the only criticism of I have of Chris McHart is I wish he would type faster.
5.0 out of 5 stars A tender, beautiful love story! 29 May 2017

UNEXPECTED POWERS was the 4th book from Chris McHart's Unexpected series. Here's Ash and D's love story. This was a joy to read!

When D rescues Alex from the kidnappers in SAVING ALEX, he also rescues Ash. D falls head over heels for the traumatized man but Ash had no hopes for himself but more loneliness and depression. Ash was a believable character for me since I've had a traumatic background and like him, I was able to grow and change and find my own happy ending.

I loved the two of them together. They truly have a loving, passionate, and innocent connection. For example, their first kiss occurs in Chapter 19! There are some lovemaking scenes but they are in the context of the growing friends-to-lovers relationship.

As for the other characters in the book, some of our favourites from the first three books pop up plus a new one that is pretty intriguing. Read what this person gets up to!

As for the plot, the author has a good pace from scene to scene and a satisfying ending. I didn't find any lag. I also think the book was powerful and insightful.

Chris McHart is creating a fascinating world out of her vivid imagination and I've enjoyed being immersed in it. There are at least three possible plot lines that I can think of so I really hope to have more books from her!
