'Real, heartbreaking - I loved it' (Katie Fforde)
'My heart is smashed and repaired for reading this wonderfully romantic and strong piece of fiction.' (Milly Johnson)
A glorious tangle of cold feet and mixed messages, Unexpected Lessons in Love is a heartwarming romantic comedy that tells us to be brave and to listen to our hearts. Suffused with Lucy's trademark warmth and gentle humour (with a splendid canine supporting cast), it's sure to win your heart. Irresistible! (Veronica Henry)
'Such a great ‘what would you do?’ book about love, truth, friendship and of course dogs. Kept me guessing all the way.' (Laura Kemp)

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC im exchange for a fair and honest review. A delightful read from Lucy Dillon. Her books are always like a warm hug and some quality time with a good friend. Being a crazy dog lady myself I love how this book and many of her others have dogs in them and that the dogs in them also teach the reader about love and other life lessons as well. Whilst this book centres on Jeannie's abruptly halted wedding day and her coming to terms with whether or not she is intending to marry the right guy for her, it also includes continuation of the love story between Rachel and George from her previous novels. Lucy Dillon is one of my favourite Chicklit authors each.book I have read of hers has been a delightful, enchanting read. #netgalley #goodreads #tea_sipping_bookworm #bookstagram #amazon#kindle #unexpectedlessonsinlove #lucydillon #penguinbooks #randomhouseuk

Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts is my favourite book of ALL time so when the opportunity came up to read this Lucy Dillon book, I didn't hesitate.
Jeannie is engaged to Dan, but as their wedding day rushes closer, she has this feeling that things are just not as they should be. And then Dan ends up in a coma.
It doesn't sound much like an uplifting book, but somehow, it is. It is a great book about being true to yourself, friendship and love, in all its guises. Jeannie has fabulous friends and great parents, and they help her through a lot of the turmoil after Dan's accident. Then there is Dan's best friend, who is the steady, reliable person that we all should have in our lives. Of course, there are puppies as well, and puppies make everything better :)
Lovely book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House UK.

This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me. One minute I was hooked and boom I was lost and skimming my way to the end. The beginning was great had all you needed to get you into the story but as the book went along the main story slowed down and it felt like the pages were just fillers as they had no true value to the main plot.
I believe this was my first read by Lucy Dillion but even after this read, I would happily read her again as the first half did grab me. In my opinion, this is not a romance read but a story of self-discovery and self-love. How to be strong and speak the truth even when it may harm or hurt someone else.
I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher to which I have honestly and voluntarily given my honest review.

Unexpected lesson in disappointment
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2019Verified Purchase
Now I have managed to finish this, I really cannot understand all of the four star reviews. The book is overlong with situations dragged out to fill pages. The references to puppy farming were, at the beginning, upsetting and I thought this was going to be the main point to the novel, but it just seemed to blur into a mushy sideline. I think I have read too many novels now that have a heroine lose her job/home/boyfriend/reputation etc but is redeemed by some new wonderful friends/location/aim in life and this is another one of those. Unfortunately, I did not like Jeannie and so had no empathy for her. I felt she was a bit of a drip and couldn’t understand why the supporting characters all, well, supported her? And the ukelele? I know there were ironic references to George Formby but I still hear his “when I’m cleaning windows”, not the tender love sound Jeannie is supposed to be composing, so that part of her “journey” didn’t work for me. Yet another author to avoid. Just wish Amazon would provide a block facility for when I want to search for something to read.

Tough Decisions
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 April 2020Verified Purchase
Initially I was a little on the fence with this book and it took me a good long while to actually settle in to the world Ms Dillon created. I could understand Jeannie's sudden last minute decision but was frustrated that she was willing to drop such a huge bombshell over the phone - admittedly this became an intrinsic part of the plot and the focus of much of Jeannie's angst. Once we get past the explosive opening and things start to settle down in to some sort of rhythm I did figure out more or less where we would end up and aside from a few tiny little details (like a bull terrier) I was pretty much spot on. Despite that I thoroughly enjoyed the book after the first 40 or so pages were out of the way - normally if I have the general plot figured out it lessens my enjoyment.
A full and vibrant world has been created in this book and whilst some of it doesn't hold up to close scrutiny on the whole it is a fairly well rounded plot. The only sticking point for me was the author's need to crowbar the puppy farming scenario in to the book. This could very easily have been left out and it did feel completely extraneous to the overall plot and as though it was added for the shock value alone. Yes, I get the whole "dogs as therapy" thing and I have read enough Lucy Dillon novels to know that dogs will form a good chunk of the plot but it is getting a little bit old now (even Jilly Cooper manages not to write about horses with EVERY novel).
That said the personal development of Jeannie was a lovely read and I liked that she was constantly full of doubts and often outright contradicted herself. Very human and very real. The message about relationships was a little less attractive to me and I think that was why it took me a while to really start enjoying the read. Even if you've only known someone a short time it can still work but the message seemed to be that it would never work if you jump too quickly.
Overall this was a book that required perseverance to get through the early pages (and some of the trickier central sections that felt like canine filler) but I was rewarded by a cracking good read!

Lovely characters including the dogs
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2020Verified Purchase
I absolutely loved this book and was hooked from the first page. I loved getting to know Jeannie and her life. I loved seeing her grow and develop over the course of this novel and it was just an absolute delight at every turn. If you like very character driven books and you like books with lovely dogs in then Lucy Dillon is the author for you.
I just absolutely loved how this book unfurled itself with the turns of every page, or the start of every chapter. I ended up listening to the audiobook of this one and it was incredibly well done. I think if I had had a physical copy I might have been tempted to flick forwards to find out more information about the mysterious Dan.
Jeannie was such a lovely character to spend this book with. She is a genuine person who is a lot like you and me. She wants to see the good in people and she wants to make the right call. I am so pleased with the friends that she made during this novel, they are the right people to be in her life. I also really liked the relationship she had with her father in this book, it is great to see a positive relationship between a father and a daughter, they're not all broken.
The subject matter of this novel is also awesome, showing people that relationships aren't always easy but sometimes nothing dramatic needs to happen in order for them to either become stronger or end. I really loved the message that this book puts out there, especially as someone who has had to cancel a wedding. The dogs in this book are of course awesome as well, I loved their involvement in the whole plot. I did shed a couple of tears where the dogs and their setting was concerned so be prepared for that.
This book was definitely up lifting and has such a well rounded plot with characters you're going to love getting to know. I enjoyed every moment of it and I am sure you will too!

Annoying lead character
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2019Verified Purchase
I love the message about puppy farming, but I just didn't like the lead character. So wet and drippy, her best friend walked over her, she was too scared to tell her fiance the truth. Just made me want to smack her tbh. Disappointing as I normally LOVE her books about life in Longhampton.

Navel-gazing ain't interesting except to the gazer!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 April 2020Verified Purchase
Lawks, how I want to like Lucy Dillon's books...I still have a lot of love lingering after Walking Back to Happiness and Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts...but the newer ones just don't appeal, sadly. I remember being quite excited when Where the Light Gets In was published, getting it, and thinking 'oh'.
With this one, to be honest, I didn't get beyond the third chapter, then skimmed to the end. Just no empathy with the protagonist and the endless navel-gazing egocentricity of it all.
Still, our local phone-box book exchange will benefit, whenever it re-opens post-Covid 🙂
